
Wolverines Set to Battle for Big Ten Tournament Title

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team (14-11) begins the postseason this week with the 2025 Big Ten Tournament, Thursday through Sunday (April 24-27) on the campus of Ohio State. The No. 7-seeded Wolverines will get things started against No. 10 seed Northwestern in the first round at 2 p.m. on Thursday (April 24) at the Auer Tennis Complex.
Notes
• Michigan is the No. 7 seed after going 8-5 in the Big Ten to finish in a sixth-place tie with USC. Overall, the Wolverines are 14-11 on the season and are No. 28 in the ITA computerized rankings.
• In the new format Big Ten Tournament, 10 of the 14 teams qualified, with two first-round matches on Thursday, followed by four quarterfinal matches on Friday (April 25) The semifinals will be held on Saturday (April 26) with the championship on Sunday (April 27). All matches will be streamed live on B1G+.
• Michigan last won the Big Ten Tournament Championship in 2022, defeating OSU in Madison, Wis. The Wolverines and Buckeyes have faced each other in the title match in each of the last three seasons, with OSU winning in 2023 and 2024.
• Three players are ranked in singles: Gavin Young (No. 51), Will Cooksey (60) and Benjamin Kittay (73). Young and Kittay, the national runners-up in doubles, are ranked No. 24 as a pair but have not played together since the national championship match in November.
• Michigan has won the last 11 meetings with Northwestern, including a 4-0 decision this season. On Senior Day, the Wolverines took the doubles point followed by wins from Cooksey at No. 1, Bjorn Swenson at No. 3 and Mert Oral at No. 6.
• Cooksey is the team leader in singles victories with 21 to his credit this season. He has a 13-6 record in dual play. His rank of No. 60 in the ITA singles ranking this week is a career high for the senior.
• Swenson boasts a singles win streak of six straight and has the second-most wins on the team with 15. He is also 14-4 in doubles play (12-3 in duals).
• Michigan is 9-4 when it wins the doubles point, having the most success at No. 3 where it has a 13-9 record at the position (8-9 at No. 2, 10-8 at No. 1).
