COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team cruised a 4-0 win over Northwestern in a first-round matchup at the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday (April 24) at the Auer Tennis Center. The No. 7-seeded Wolverines now advance to the quarterfinals to face second-seeded UCLA tomorrow (Friday, April 25).
Michigan grabbed the doubles point with a clutch win from Will Cooksey and Patorn Hanchaikul at No. 1, a 6-2 decision. It was the program's first win at No. 1 doubles since it knocked off Ohio State on March 28, and the first for Cooksey and Hanchaikul at the No. 1 position this season. Alex Cairo and Nicholas Steiglehner followed with a 6-2 at No. 3, their first win as a pair this season. Bjorn Swenson and Mert Oral led 5-2 on court 2 before the match was called.
The Wolverines took five of six first sets to put themselves in a great position to move on in the tournament.
Hanchaikul dominated at No. 3 singles, winning 11 straight games, as he took down Greyson Casey 6-1, 6-0.
After a 6-2 first set, Steiglehner jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second over Max Bengtsson at No. 4 and finished with a 6-1 score.
Oral posted a perfect first set at No. 6, with a 6-0 decision over Vincent Yang, and grabbed two more breaks in the second for a 6-2 score.
The Wolverines will battle UCLA in the quarterfinals tomorrow (April 25) at the Auer Tennis Center, with a start time currently slated at 1:30 p.m.
