
Maize and Blue to Open Outdoor Season at USF Alumni Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team will open its outdoor slate in Tampa, Fla., at the USF Alumni Invitational on Friday and Saturday (March 21-22) at USF Track and Field Stadium. Action on Friday (March 21) will start with the long jump at 2 p.m., while action on Saturday (March 22) will begin at 12:30 p.m. with the 4x100-meter relay.

• Michigan finished sixth at the 2024 Big Ten Outdoor Championships, taking home four medals and two individual titles. Savannah Sutherland (400-meter hurdles) and Aasia Laurencin (100-meter hurdles) won their second straight titles, while Emma Yungeberg took home silver in the javelin throw and Corinne Jemison took bronze in the discus throw. Sutherland's time of 55.01 seconds in the finals set the Big Ten meet record.
• Sixteen Wolverines advanced to the NCAA East Preliminary round in 17 events and one relay, with five earning NCAA Outdoor Championship berths.
• Yungeberg set the program javelin throw record at NCAAs for the third straight meet, throwing for 52.36 meters (171 feet, 9 inches) and placing 14th for second-team All-America honors.
• Laurencin was one of three podium finishers, taking sixth in the 100-meter hurdles (12.86) to improve upon her seventh-place finish from 2023.
• Jemison set a program record in the discus throw (60.07m/197-1) to finish fifth, while Sutherland earned a runner-up finish in the 400-meter hurdles. Sutherland's prelims time (54.04) set the program and Canadian national records before breaking that with a time of 53.26 in the finals.
• U-M tied for 18th overall with 15 points.
• The Wolverines welcomed two transfers in Mary Caroline Heinen (Columbia) and Brooke Johnston (UCLA) to the distance squad in the offseason and 16 freshmen to the roster.
• Michigan returners include Sutherland and Yungeberg as well as Riley Ammenhauser (triple jump), Elizabeth Tapper (shot put, discus throw), Sidney Green (400-meter hurdles), and Samantha Hastie (1,500-meter run).
