ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team earned a first-place finish hosting the Simmons-Harvey Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 18) at the U-M Indoor Track Building, with Savannah Sutherland and Elizabeth Tapper both setting program records.
The Maize and Blue finished first with 126 points, while Michigan State finished second (109) and Purdue finished third (49).
Tapper was the first Wolverine to set a new record. She tossed the shot put 16.99 meters (55 feet, 9 inches) on her fourth throw to set the program record after her third throw also cleared the prior standard, 16.86 (55-4.75), which she set last week at the Wolverine Invitational.
Sutherland was next to break a record, winning the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.49 seconds. The senior previously set the standard of 23.51 in 2023.
Aasia Laurencin earned a personal best in the 60-meter dash preliminaries, running 7.48 to advance to the finals. The graduate student finished first in the finals, running 7.48 again to land at No. 8 on the program performers list.
Freshman Payton Smith earned a spot on the program performers list in the 400-meter dash, running 54.40 for the win and the No. 10 time. In the 3,000-meter run, Mary Caroline Heinen ran for a personal-best 9:31.27 to finish first while Anjali Hocker Singh finished fourth with a personal-best time of 9:45.55.
The throws group continues to have a strong start to 2025, with Tapper finishing seventh in the weight throw (16.31m/53-6.25) and her second personal-best mark of the day. Abigail Russell had another impressive meet, finishing third in both the weight throw (18.93m, 62-1.25) and the shot put (15.85m/52-0). Her weight throw mark is tied for No. 6 on the program performers list while her shot-put mark is No. 8.
Sophomores Amare Harlan and Maya Anderson both posted personal-best marks in the long jump, with Harlan finishing first (5.90m/19-4.25) and Anderson finishing second (5.73m/18-9.75).
The Wolverines hit the road for the Crossroads of American Invitational next Friday and Saturday (Jan. 24-25) in Indianapolis, Ind., at the Indiana Farm Bureau Fall Creek Pavilion.
