
Michigan's Historic Season Comes to Close in NCAA Quarterfinals at No. 2 Boston College

NEWTON, Mass. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team saw its historic 2024 season come to a close as it fell 14-9 to No. 2 Boston College on Thursday (May 16) in the NCAA quarterfinals at Newton Campus Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The Wolverines put together their best season in program history, ranked as high as No. 2 nationally, and led the nation in scoring defense for the entirety of the season. Thursday contest was U-M's first-ever appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals.
Junior Kaylee Dyer led U-M with five points (three goals, two assists), while Jill Smith added two goals and Caroline Davis had two assists. Senior Lily Montemarano led U-M on the draw with five wins and Smith had four.
Defensively, Grace Callahan had three caused turnovers and Maddie Burns picked up three ground balls.
Boston College opened the game with two straight goals within the first three minutes to take the early 2-0 lead. Smith earned a free position opportunity with 12:09 on the clock and fired from the eight-meter to bring Michigan within one, 2-1. However, the Eagles outscored Michigan 3-1 in the final 12 minutes of the quarter to take a 6-2 advantage after one quarter.
U-M scored the first goal of the second quarter when Davis found Ava Class from X, but the Boston College offense took over, scoring five straight goals to take a 10-3 lead. Dyer added a final goal for Michigan going into the halftime break as U-M trailed 11-3 after two complete quarters.
Smith led Michigan with a goal and two draw control wins, while Dyer had one goal and an assist after 30 minutes of action.
BC scored the first goal of the second half before Dyer scored two straight and Burke scored one to bring Michigan within five, 12-7. The Eagles added one final goal and U-M trailed 13-7 going into the final 15 minutes of action.
Smith finished on a free-position chance to start the fourth quarter for the Wolverines but they were unable to overcome the deficit and fell 14-9.
Michigan concludes the program's most successful season with a 16-4 overall record after it made its first-ever appearance in the NCAA quarterfinal.
