
Michigan to Face Binghamton to Open 33rd NCAA Tournament Appearance

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team (16-12) begins its 33rd trip to the NCAA Tournament taking on Binghamton in the first round on Friday (May 3) at 10 a.m. at the Milstein Family Tennis Center on the campus of Columbia University. The winner will head to the second round and will take on the winner of Friday's Columbia vs. Quinnipiac match on Saturday (May 4) at 1 p.m.
Notes
• Michigan earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament with a 16-12 overall record. The Wolverines finished as the runner-up at the Big Ten Tournament Championship, falling to No. 1-ranked Ohio State 4-1 in the final.
• Michigan reached the 2024 Big Ten Championship after defeating Northwestern 4-0 in the quarterfinals and No. 19 ranked Michigan State in the semifinals. Will Cooksey played the hero clinching the 4-3 win over the Spartans at No. 5 singles in the third set.
• The Wolverines are 10-2 in their last 12 matches, with both losses coming to the Buckeyes. Michigan has three wins over ranked teams in the last month, two over Michigan State twice (No. 18, No. 19) and Illinois (No. 19).
• Michigan makes its eighth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament and 33rd overall. The Wolverines made back-to-back trips to the Elite Eight in 2022 and 2023.
• This will be the first meeting between Michigan and Binghamton in program history. The Wolverines hold a 5-1 advantage in the series with Columbia and have yet to play Quinnipiac.
• Gavin Young and Jacob Bickersteth were selected to the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, as the duo qualified for the NCAA Doubles Championship and Young for the NCAA Singles Championship. This is the third season Young has qualified in doubles, second in singles and the first year for Bickersteth.
• Young is 12-8 at No. 1 singles this season and won his last match over No. 33-ranked Justin Boulais (Ohio State) in straight sets 6-1, 6-4. After reaching the semifinals of the ITA All-American Championships in the fall, he has recorded 12 wins over ranked opponents and won eight straight matches this spring.
• Bickersteth is 8-10 at No. 2 singles and 19-13 in singles overall. Bjorn Swenson is 4-7 at No. 3 and 14-15 overall, while Patorn Hanchaikul is 7-3 at No. 4 and 14-7 overall. Cooksey is 8-5 at No. 5 and 16-14 on the season.
• Nicholas Steiglehner is on a seven-match win streak at No. 6 singles. He is 10-4 at the position and 20-12 overall.
• Michigan is 11-1 when it wins the doubles point and has come back to win the dual match five times when it has lost the point, including Saturday's win versus MSU. Hanchaikul and Cooksey are 7-8 at No. 2 and went 3-0 in the Big Ten, while Swenson and Oral are 6-3 at No. 3. Young and Bickersteth are ranked No. 17 in the latest ITA double rankings and are 12-7 overall with three wins over ranked duos this season.
