
U-M Blanks Binghamton to Advance to NCAA Second Round

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team blanked Binghamton University, 4-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday (May 3) at the Milstein Family Tennis Center at Columbia University.
This is the third straight season the Wolverines have won a NCAA first-round match.
Michigan won the doubles point at No. 2 and 3. Patorn Hanchaikul and Will Cooksey started the match with a break point and cruised to a 6-2 win over Ronin Lotliker and James McPherson. Mert Oral and Bjorn Swenson also started with a break to take down Andrew Fang and Filipe Costa, 6-4 ,for the pair's 10th victory of the season. No. 23 ranked Gavin Young and Jacob Bickersteth were tied 5-5 on serve when the match was halted.
The Wolverines won all six first sets and made quick work of the Bearcats in the singles game.
Swenson allowed just one point in his two-set singles win on No. 3 versus Lotlikar, breaking him six times. With 6-1, 6-0 wins, and his 10th dual win, Swenson improves to 15-15 in singles.
Nicholas Steiglehner collected his eighth consecutive win as he captured 6-1, 6-2 victories over McPherson at No. 6. He took a 4-0 edge in the first set en route to a 6-1 win and won the last four games in the second set for a 6-2 victory. Steiglehner is now 14-6 in dual singles, 21-12 overall with his last loss coming back on March 24.
Cooksey cliched at No. 5 singles with 6-1, 6-2 wins over Weekes. He went up 4-0 in the first set and used a break to his advantage to go on a four-game run in the second. This marks Cooksey's third straight singles win as he moves to 13-9 in dual matches.
Young and Bickersteth were up 6-1, 4-2 at No. 1 and 2 singles when their matches were called. Hanchaikul led 6-2, 3-0 at No. 4.
Michigan will face No. 8 seed Columbia on Saturday (May 4) at 1 p.m.
