ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's tennis redshirt sophomore Max Dahlin, the 2026 ITA National Rookie of the Year, captured the first professional singles title of his career with a straight-set victory at the M15 Ann Arbor on Sunday (Oct. 4) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
The title earned Dahlin 15 ATP points, adding to the 22 he earned this summer at the Bonn Challenger.
A native of Karlstad, Sweden, Dahlin won four matches to advance to Sunday's championship. He defeated former Yale player Vignesh Gogineni 6-1, 6-2 in the first round before taking down former Ohio State player Alexander Bernard 7-5, 7-6 (3) in the second round. In the quarterfinals, Dahlin won the first set 6-1 against Columbia freshman Damir Zhalgasbay before Zhalgasbay retired during the second set. Dahlin then defeated fellow Wolverine Naoto Tomizawa 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals.
Facing TCU's Oliver Bonding, the Big 12 Freshman of the Year, in the championship match, Dahlin earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory. With the opening set tied at 4, Dahlin broke Bonding to take a 5-4 advantage before serving out the set. Dahlin broke early in the second set to take a 3-1 lead and maintained the advantage the rest of the way to secure the title.
Tomizawa reached the first singles semifinal of his collegiate career. Two Michigan doubles teams also advanced to the semifinals, with Tomizawa partnering with Evan Burnett and Benjamin Azar teaming with Alex Cairo.
Michigan alumnus Bjorn Swenson also captured his first professional doubles title, teaming with Bernard for a 4-6, 6-1, 10-5 victory over the top-seeded duo of Jeffrey Fradkin and Matt Kuhar in the championship match.
