Smith Sets Program Goals Record, U-M Rides Third Quarter Run to Win at No. 8 Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, Md. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team used a four-goal run in the third quarter to complete a 13-9 comeback win over No. 8 Johns Hopkins on Sunday (April 14) at Homewood Field.
After trailing for the first two quarters, the Wolverines (14-1, 4-1 Big Ten) shut down the Blue Jays (10-5, 2-3 Big Ten) for almost 24 minutes and netted seven unanswered goals to lock up the road victory to post a 10-0 road record. The win is the sixth over a ranked opponent this season and second over a top-10 team.
Junior Jill Smith broke the U-M career goals record with five goals to bring her career total to 125, topping Kim Coughlan's 124 goals from 2014-17. Along with Smith, Ava Class, Jane Fetterolf and Katharine Merrifield all scored two goals each and Annabelle Burke had two assists.
Defensively, Jordyn Harrison had a career-best three caused turnovers and five ground balls, while Maddie Burns had two ground balls and Taylor Cullen had two caused turnovers. Josie Gooch led the draw control with three wins and Erin O'Grady made eight saves in the cage.
Johns Hopkins scored three minutes into the match to take the first lead, but the Wolverines answered as they won the draw and knotted it up at one less than 30 seconds later. The Blue Jays scored three straight to swing the lead to 4-1 with just over three minutes to play in the opening stanza. Burke found Smith on a cut with two minutes to go as U-M went into the second quarter trailing 4-2.
JHU netted four goals in the second quarter, two of which came off a non-releasable yellow card, while Smith scored two goals for Michigan the second quarter and U-M trailed 8-4 at the break.
Smith scored three goals in the first half and Harrison paced the defense with three caused turnovers and four ground balls.
Michigan came out of the halftime break scoring three straight goals, including back-to-back tallies from Class to come within one of the Blue Jays, 8-7, with just under four minutes left in the third quarter.
Merrifield capped off U-M's third quarter run in the final minute of the third quarter as the two teams headed into the final 15 minutes of action knotted up at eight.
Michigan took its first lead of the game when Maya Rutherford caused a turnover on the defensive end and Burns brought the ball down the length of the field. She got the ball to Smith, who found Fetterolf coming down the lane to put the Wolverines up 9-8.
U-M won the ensuing draw and extended its lead to two on a Kaylee Dyer goal, forcing Johns Hopkins to burn a timeout.
Michigan outscored JHU 3-1 over the final 11 minutes to complete the comeback win.
U-M concludes its 2024 regular season next Sunday (April 21) when it hosts No. 1 Northwestern at noon. The contest will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
