BOSTON, Mass. -- Junior forward Jackson Hallum netted his first career hat trick in style on Saturday night (Nov. 2), with his overtime goal propelling the 11th-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team past No. 5 Boston University to clinch the sweep at Agganis Arena.
BU held a 3-2 advantage after the second period before the teams traded goals within two minutes. A power-play goal from Hallum knotted the game at 4-4 at 12:40.
After a Wolverine was boarded into the end wall to earn the first power play of the contest for Michigan, the squad capitalized. Just 11 seconds into the man-advantage, Hallum netted his second goal of the contest while posted up in the slot playing the bumper position for his first power-play goal of the season. Ethan Edwards and T.J. Hughes collected the assists on Hallum's tally.
Each side threatened as regulation ticked down, including one final chance for the Terriers with eight seconds left that Cameron Korpi blocked up high to preserve the tie and send the game to OT.
A bit over three minutes later, Hallum potted the game-winning goal off a feed from Garrett Schifsky to clinch his first hat trick in a critical non-conference series sweep.
The pace of play was high from the opening puck drop as the teams quickly reacquainted themselves following U-M's 5-1 Friday night (Nov. 1) win.
Evan Werner continued his breakout weekend by driving the center lane and putting himself in perfect position to finish off a rebound that Nick Moldenhauer had created by testing the goalie with a shot of his own from the right flank. Freshman blueliner Dakoda Rhéaume-Mullen collected the secondary assist on Werner's third goal of the weekend that made it 1-0 at 11:19.
Boston University tied the game with a snipe from the right dot at 14:33 after winning an offensive zone faceoff.
With the period winding down, Boston won a puck battle near the Michigan blue line before leading an impromptu rush and capping it off with a backhanded goal at 19:54 to make it 2-1 in favor of the home team.
Michigan started the second with the same fervor that accompanied much of their game on Friday night, and it paid off with an early goal off the stick of Hallum, who converted a close-range one-timer off a slick pass from Hughes just 31 seconds into the frame to make it 2-2. Hughes collected the primary assist and defenseman Luca Fantilli notched the secondary assist.
At 4:48, the Terriers surged ahead with a highlight-reel goal to make it a 3-2 game.
The Wolverines spent the first half of the final frame searching for a third goal as each line rolled out to take their turn in the pursuit. The team finally broke through to tie the game at 10:12 when Kienan Draper sent a low shot on goal to finish off a strong cycle for U-M. Linemate Philippe Lapointe earned the assist by finding Draper's tape while weaving through traffic.
A bit over 90 seconds later, Boston University capitalized on a U-M defensive lapse to take back the lead and make it 4-3 at 11:48 off a backdoor goal from a skater who had snuck behind the Wolverines.
Korpi continued a Saturday trend by starting in net for the Wolverines, and the freshman turned away 24 shots to earn the win over a high-profile Terrier squad in extra time.
Next week, Michigan will kick off conference play by welcoming Notre Dame to Yost Ice Arena for a two-game series on Friday and Saturday (Nov. 8-9). The first game will feature an early puck drop, set for 6 p.m., while the second contest will begin at 7 p.m. Both games will be streamed live on B1G+.
