SEATTLE, Wash. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team scored minutes into the second half, but Washington answered with three unanswered goals in a 3-1 Huskies victory on Thursday evening (Oct. 10) at Husky Field.
Washington (7-4-2, 4-3-0 Big Ten) fired 16 shots on goal, putting eight on frame compared to seven shots and five on goal for Michigan (2-11-1, 1-6-0 Big Ten) in the contest. Goalkeeper Stephanie Sparkowski made five saves in goal for the Wolverines.
The teams battled to a scoreless first 45 minutes of action, as Michigan relied on its defense to keep the score level. Sparkowski was stellar in the first half, recording four first-half saves. Michigan also got an assist from the goalpost in the 30th minute to keep the Huskies at bay.
Michigan had a goal wiped off the board in the 37th minute when VAR deemed the Wolverines were offside on U-M's best offensive chance of the first half.
The Wolverines scored minutes into the second half, taking a short corner kick and Kali Burrell scoring her first goal of the season. Sierra Sargent picked up the assist, playing the short corner to Burrell right outside the box on the left side. Burrell fired from deep, finding the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Washington answered moments later in the 50th minute, converting on a cross across the box into a goal to knot the game at one.
Michigan had another great chance in the 53rd minute, with Jenna Lang on a breakaway and firing at goal with her left foot. The UW goalkeeper made a great save, resulting in a Michigan corner that the Wolverines did not convert to keep the game tied at 1-1.
Michigan again caught a break from the crossbar in the 63rd minute, keeping a surefire Washington goal off the board. The Huskies quickly rebounded from that, earning a penalty kick less than a minute later. UW converted the free chance, taking its first lead of the contest at 2-1.
Washington put the game out of reach with four minutes remaining, taking advantage of a Michigan miscue on the backline to score in the 87th minute to provide the 3-1 margin.
U-M will completes its Pacific Northwest trek on Sunday (Oct. 13) at 1 p.m. PDT when they face Oregon at Papé Field. The match will be streamed live on B1G+.
