
Amene, McFarland Set Meet Records at Wolverine Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team opened 2024 with a bang at the Wolverine Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 13) at the U-M Indoor Track and Field Building, setting two meet records and seeing 14 podium finishes.
Dubem Amene set the 200-meter dash meet record (21.18 seconds), winning the race and setting a personal best. Amene's time is the seventh-best in the NCAA this season.
Trent McFarland had a breakout performance in his Michigan debut, breaking the meet record to win the 800-meter run (1:51.77) and post the No. 19 time in the NCAA. Riley Flemington also had a strong performance, finishing in a close second with a time of 1:51.94.
Junior Lawrence Gilliam broke the U-M 300-meter dash record with a time of 34.97.
Tianhao Wei finished third the long jump with a personal best mark of 7.04m (23 feet, 1.2 inches), while Cole Sheldon placed third in the pole vault at 4.75m (15 feet, 7 inches).
The throwers had a standout day, earning the top-two finishes in the shot put and going 2-3-4 in the weight throw. Aiden Felty set a personal best to win the shot put with a mark of 17.72m (58 feet, 1.75 inches), while Zane Forist finished second with a mark of 17.29m (56 feet, 8.75 inches). Eli Winter finished second in the weight throw (19.30m/63 feet, 4 inches), Forist finished third (18.80m/61 feet, 8.25 inches), and Jake Steslicki finished fourth (18.50m/60 feet, 8.50 inches).
The Maize and Blue will remain at home for its next meet, hosting the Simmons-Harvey Invitational next Saturday (Jan. 20). Competition is slated to begin at 9 a.m. at the U-M Indoor Track Building.
