SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Behind a second-place finish from graduate transfer Owen MacKenzie, the University of Michigan men's cross country team finished third with 154 points at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invite on Friday (Sept. 29).
MacKenzie got off to a fast start, sitting at sixth through the first mile of the Men's Gold 5 Mile race. The Duke transfer jumped four spots to second position after 4,000 meters and held on through the finish line, posting a time of 24:13.7.
Peter Baracco steadily picked up his pace throughout the course of the race, starting in 28th place but rising to seventh and finishing with a time of 24:37.1. Henry Johnson fell as far as 49th but fought back to grab 33rd overall with a mark 25:05.3. Â
Anthony Hancock and Myles Liss-Riordan closed out the scoring for the Maize and Blue, finishing with times of 25:05.5 and 25.59.4, respectively.
Four freshmen competed unattached in the Men's Open 5 Mile race with Nathan Lopez finishing with the top time of 24:14.4.
The Wolverines will return to action on Oct. 13 when they travel to Madison, Wis., for the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational.
