COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The University of Michigan men's cross country team closed out its 2025 slate on Saturday (Nov. 22) at the NCAA Championships hosted by Missouri, finishing 31st with 664 points at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course.
Oklahoma State took the team title with 57 points. Habtom Samuel won the individual crown with a time of 28:33.9.
U-M sat in 28th after the first kilometer, with Luke Venhuizen leading the squad in 153rd. He moved up to 149th at the 2K mark, while Nathan Lopez and Trent McFarland sat in 175th and 180th, respectively, for the Wolverines to remain in 28th.
Venhuizen continued to move up in the standings, jumping 19 spots to 130th after three kilometers. Lopez moved up 10 spots to 165th place. Lopez overtook Venhuizen as the Michigan lead runner at the halfway mark, coming in at No. 121 with five kilometers to go.
The Wolverines sat in 31st at the 6K mark, with Lopez maintaining the team lead in 107th place. Lopez cracked the top-100 heading into the final two kilometers, sitting in 89th.
With one kilometer left, Lopez moved into 88th place while Venhuizen moved up eight spots to 145th and McFarland moved up to 162nd.
Lopez was the first Wolverine to cross the finish line, placing 102nd with a personal-best time of 29:36.3, shaving 32 seconds off his previous best. Venhuizen was next at 142nd (29:53.9) followed by McFarland in 158th (30:00.6). The Maize and Blue finished in 31st place with 664 points.
Brendan Herger and Luke Alverson made their championship debuts, finishing 203rd (30:31.0) and 239th (31.19.1), respectively, both personal-best times. All seven runners improved on their NCAA Great Lakes Regional times, and the team's average time was 33 seconds faster.
