JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team had three athletes qualify for the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Championships as it closed out the NCAA East Preliminaries on Friday (May 26) at the University of North Florida's Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida.
Zane Forist earned his first NCAA Championship qualification in the discus throw amid 20 mph winds. Forist's best throw was 55.57 meters (182 feet, 3 inches) -- the fifth-best mark in program history and a career best. Notably, he was the only freshman to qualify from the East region.
In the 1,500 meters, Nick Foster also punched his ticket to nationals. Foster ran a smart race, finding a spot near the front of the pack early to avoid being boxed in. As the runners entered the home stretch, Foster battled with South Carolina's Anass Essayi and North Carlina's Jesse Hunt to the finish. His finish was enough to take the heat and earn an automatic qualifying spot. He secured 13th overall with a time of 3:53.77.
Joshua Zeller competed in the 110-meter hurdle quarterfinals. He finished 19th overall with a time of 14.04.
Amid tough winds, Dubem Amene faced a competitive group of sprinters in the 400-meter quarterfinals. Amene's time of 46.61 put him in fourth at the end of the first heat. This was more than enough for the junior to punch a ticket to his fifth consecutive NCAA Championships, earning seventh overall.
To close the day for the Wolverines, Tom Brady competed in the 5,000 meters after racing the 10,000 on Wednesday (May 24). Brady worked hard to keep up with a talented group of runners that quickly spaced out. He ultimately finished in 25th overall with a time of 14:10.00.
The three Michigan men will now compete at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Austin, Texas, June 7-9, at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
