
Michigan Cruises Past Central Michigan in First Round of NCAA Tournament

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team cruised past Central Michigan 13-6 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday (May 12) at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium on the campus of Northwestern.
U-M will stay in Evanston to take on No. 1 Northwestern in the second round Sunday (May 14) at 11 a.m. CDT and the game will be streamed live on ESPN+. It will be the third time the teams have matched up this season and the second time in as many weeks.
The Wolverines (12-7) used a 12-goal run to solidify their victory over the Chippewas (10-9) with four goals from Jill Smith and a hat trick from Erin Garvey. Also tallying a multi-goal outing was Jane Fetterolf, who scored a pair of goals and added two assists for four points.
Junior Lily Montemarano led U-M on the draw control with five wins, while Smith had three and Garvey had two. Defensively, Michigan caused four turnovers on the day and Morgan Whitaker had four ground balls. In the cage, Maya Santa-Maria made five saves in her 42 minutes of work and allowed just one goal.
Central Michigan scored first within the first three minutes of action before Michigan answered with a 7-0 run, including three goals from Smith, to take a comfortable 7-1 advantage in the opening stanza.
U-M kept the Chippewas off the scoreboard for the entire second quarter and added three goals to its tally to take a 10-1 lead at the halftime break. Smith led the Wolverines offense with three goals in the first quarter, while Fetterolf and Garvey scored two each. Michigan dominated the draw 9-4 with three wins from Montemarano.
Smith and Garvey teamed up for back-to-back goals to open the second half and CMU found its first goal since the first quarter to close out the third quarter with Michigan carrying a 12-2 running-clock lead.
The Wolverines added one final goal in the final 15 minutes, while Central Michigan scored four goals as U-M earned a decisive 13-6 victory and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
