
Smith Breaks U-M Single-Season Points Record, Wolverines Fall to No. 25 Blue Jays

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team fell 14-7 to No. 25 Johns Hopkins on Thursday night (April 13) in a Big Ten contest at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
Sophomore Jill Smith broke the U-M single-season points record with a pair of goals on the evening, while Erin Garvey also netted a pair of goals for the Wolverines (10-6, 3-3 Big Ten).
U-M won the draw-control battle 14-10 with Lily Montemarano earning six draw-control wins, while Maddie Burns had four in the first half of action. Graduate student Morgan Whitaker led the defense with three caused turnovers and Mariana Lopez-Ona added two caused turnovers on the evening. In goal, Maya Santa-Maria made two saves in the first half and Erin O'Grady made four in the second half.
Michigan opened up the scoring on a Garvey free position, but JHU took the lead with two straight of its own early in the first quarter. U-M used a second free-position opportunity, this time from Smith, to tie up the contest at 2. The Blue Jays took a four-goal run into the second quarter to go up 6-2 before Smith knotted her second of the game to bring U-M within three, 6-3, with 5:02 left in the half.
Following a JHU goal, Kaylee Dyer went top shelf at the buzzer to cut the Johns Hopkins lead to 7-4 heading to the halftime break. The Wolverines led the draw 9-3 with Burns winning four and Montemarano winning three in the first half, while both Whitaker and Lopez-Ona had two caused turnovers in the opening half.
Garvey netted her second goal of the game to start the third quarter, but again Johns Hopkins had an answer with back-to-back goals of its own to take a 9-5 advantage. The Wolverines would be unable to overcome the deficit adding just two more goals, while the Blue Jays went on a four-goal run to open the final quarter and earn the 14-7 victory.
Michigan will wait to find out its seeding in the Big Ten Tournament with the quarterfinal rounds hosted at campus sites on Saturday, April 29.
