
Michigan Dominates Cincinnati in Non-Conference Contest

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Behind a 12-goal first half, the No. 19-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team earned a dominant 16-3 victory over Cincinnati in a non-conference contest Sunday afternoon (March 12) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
The Wolverines (6-3) scored 16 straight goals against the Bearcats (6-3) before they closed out the contest with their three goals of the game. The Michigan defense controlled the Cincinnati offense as it allowed just six shots in the first 30 minutes of play and only 18 total over the full contest.
Michigan was led on the offensive side of the ball by Jill Smith, who netted five goals and added one assist, while Caroline Davis had two goals and two assists for four points. Erin Garvey and freshman Ceci Stein also added a pair of goals each to their tallies and Jane Fetterolf had two assists for the Maize and Blue.
Josie Gooch was dominant on the draw with four wins, while Maddie Burns and Lily Montemarano had three and two draw-control victories, respectively.
Annabelle Burke led Michigan with two caused turnovers and Fetterolf added a team-high three ground balls. In the cage, Maya Santa-Maria earned the win by playing the whole first half and making six saves, while Erin O'Grady and Mariah Sweeney split time in the cage in the second half of action.
The Wolverines got on the board less than two minutes into the contest as Kaley Thompson wrapped around the back of the cage off a pass from Davis to put U-M up, 1-0. From there, the Michigan offense could not be stopped as it recorded four more goals in a two-minute span to go up 5-0 over the Bearcats. Michigan closed out the first quarter with two more goals and took an 8-0 advantage into the second quarter.
U-M's offensive prowess continued in the second quarter as Fetterolf found Davis for her first goal of the game and Smith recorded her eighth hat trick of the season to put the Wolverines up 10-0 and start a running clock with 9:05 left to play in the opening half.
Michigan tacked on three more goals in the third quarter and added their final goal just over a minute into the fourth to take a 16-0 advantage over the Bearcats with 13:49 remaining. Cincinnati scored its first goal of the game with 12:03 left and proceeded to add two more but Michigan went on to the victory at home.
U-M will get back to Big Ten Conference action on Thursday (March 16) at Northwestern. Game time is set for 7 p.m. CT on the Big Ten Network.
