McDaniel, Burnett Combine for 47 in Blowout of St. John's at MSG

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Dug McDaniel and Nimari Burnett each set career bests in scoring with 26 and 21 points, respectively, as the University of Michigan men's basketball team defeated St. John's, 89-73, Monday night (Nov. 13) in the Gavitt Tipoff Games at Madison Square Garden.
Leaders and Best
McDaniel posted a game-high 26 points, six rebounds and seven assists while Burnett dropped each of his 21 points in the first half. Tarris Reed Jr. added five points, a career-best 11 rebounds and three blocks.
Turning Point
With 3:03 remaining in the first half, the Wolverines went on an 11-3 run to close the half, taking a 48-38 lead into the break. St. John's would only pull within nine the rest of the way as U-M closed out a dominant win.
First Half
Burnett dominated the scoring column out of the gate, shooting six-for-six from the field to post 15 of the Maize and Blue's first 16 points in the opening six minutes. His last bucket of the opening outburst -- a corner three-pointer -- kickstarted a 13-4 run to give Michigan a 26-22 lead with 9:11 before the break.
The Wolverines converted just one field goal over the next three minutes as the Red Storm retook a 31-29 lead. Burnett ended the dry spell with a three-pointer, starting an 8-0 run after buckets from McDaniel and Olivier Nkamhoua; however, St. John's answered to cut the U-M lead to two.
With 3:03 remaining in the first half, the Wolverines went on an 11-3 run to close the half, taking a 10-point lead into the break.
Second Half
After opening the second half just one-for-five from the field, the Maize and Blue made each of its next four attempts to go on a 10-3 run and expand its lead to 60-43.
After an and-one from St. John's Joel Soriano, the Wolverines kept their foot on the gas with a 16-4 run -- eight of which were scored by Will Tschetter. Michigan held a 26-point lead with 8:39 remaining, its largest of the game.
McDaniel scored each of the next eight U-M points to set his new career best. St. John's managed to cut the margin to 16 in the closing minutes, but the Wolverines held on for the dominant win.
What's Next
The Wolverines will return to Crisler Center to face Long Beach State on Friday (Nov. 17) at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
Notes
• Burnett scored each of his 21 points in the first half, shooting eight-for-eight from the field and four-for-four from three-point range.
• Through three games, Terrance Williams II is averaging a career-best 13.3 points per game. He has reached double figures in all three games this season.
• Nkamhoua posted nine points, seven rebounds and four assists. He has grabbed at least seven rebounds in all three games this season.
• With the win, Michigan extends its winning streak at Madison Square Garden to 11 straight.
