Michigan Advances to Second Round of NCAA Tournament with Win over Notre Dame

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The No. 21-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team (11-6) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 17-11 victory over No. 16-ranked Notre Dame (9-10) Friday night (May 13) at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium on the campus of Northwestern University.
Graduate senior goalie Arielle Weissman notched a career high with 17 saves, while four Wolverines recorded hat tricks in the victory. Fifth-year Caitlin Muir led U-M with five points (three goals, two assists), while Kaley Thompson recorded her sixth hat trick of the season.
Senior Claire Galvin and freshman Jill Smith rounded out the quartet of hat tricks, the third of Galvin's career and the first for Smith. In total, seven Wolverines recorded a goal for Michigan with six having multi-goal outings.
On the draw, Hailey Mead had a team-high four wins and Kaitlyn Mead added three to go along with two goals. Annabelle Burke chipped in with two draw wins, one goal and one assist.
Defensively, Maddie Burns and Josie Gooch each caused two turnovers and Burns picked up a team-best three ground balls.
Thompson put the Wolverines on the scoreboard first in the opening quarter as she wrapped around the cage and fired it in less than three minutes into the game. U-M continued to put the pressure on the Notre Dame defense as Burke took the ball from the top of the eight-meter and scored Michigan's second goal. On the ensuing possession, she won the draw and set up K. Mead to extend the Wolverine lead to 3-0 with 6:17 left in the first.
The Fighting Irish surged back with three straight goals of their own including two free position scores as the two teams would end the first quarter tied at 3-3.
Goals continued to come in threes for the Maize and Blue as it opened the second quarter on a 3-0 run over a five-minute span to go up 6-3. UND returned the run with a pair of goals of its own, but Smith scored her second of the game as she caused a turnover in front of the Notre Dame cage and turned and fired the shot past the goalie to allow Michigan to go up 7-5 with just under seven minutes to play in the half.
U-M outscored Notre Dame 2-1 in the closing minutes and Weissman made a save on a free position in the last second of half allowing Michigan to take a 9-6 advantage into the break. Smith led the Wolverines with three first-half goals and Galvin added a pair.
Muir notched a pair of goals in the third quarter and Garvey netted her second free position goal of the game as Michigan headed into the final 15 minutes of play with a 12-8 advantage over Notre Dame.
The Wolverines continued to control the pace of the game in the closing 15 minutes of play, outscoring the Fighting Irish 5-3 with two goals from Thompson.
Michigan advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and will take on host No 4 Northwestern at 1 p.m. CT at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium on ESPN+.
