NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. -- Three members of the No. 21-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team -- graduate student Arielle Weissman, senior Kaitlyn Mead and sophomore Maddie Burns -- were named West/Midwest All-Region as announced by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association on Thursday (May 12).
Weissman became just the second player in Michigan history to earn first team honors, while Mead and Burns each earned second team honors. The honor is the first for the trio of Wolverines.
Weissman, who joins Molly Garrett on the list of Michigan first team all-region selections, started all 16 games in the cage for U-M this season. She played 852:13 of Michigan's 968:23 of total game time, made 123 saves in the cage and carried a .506 save percentage. Weissman recorded four games with double-digit saves, including a season-best 14 against then-No. 4 Northwestern. For her efforts, Weissman also was named second team All-Big Ten for the first time in her career.
Mead, who is a two-time All-Big Ten honoree, led Michigan on the draw control with 65 wins and 12 games with three wins or more, including nine against No. 17 USC which ranks second in U-M single-game history. Mead also ranked second with 31 points (24 goals, seven assists). The Sparta, N.J., native had four hat tricks this season and was named the Big Ten Midfielder of the Week once and is a 2022 Tewaaraton Award nominee.
Burns, who also was named first team All-Big Ten, helped lead the Michigan defense in 2022. She was second on the team with 15 caused turnovers and fourth with 20 ground balls. The Philadelphia, Pa., native helped the Wolverines defense rank as high as No. 3 nationally (7.3 goals allowed per game), while ending the regular season at No. 10 (8.81 goals allowed).
The trio and the rest of the Michigan squad will face off against No. 16 Notre Dame on Friday (May 13) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at 7 p.m. CT in Evanston, Ill. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+
