FORT WORTH, Texas -- The University of Michigan women's gymnastics team saw its 2022 season come to a close as it placed fourth with a 196.2875 in the second NCAA semifinal Thursday (April 14) at Dickies Arena.
Junior Sierra Brooks paced the Wolverines as a two-time All-American, tying for second in the session on the uneven bars with a 9.9500 and tying for fourth on the vault with a 9.9000. Seniors Abby Heiskell and Natalie Wojcik also earned two All-America honors each. Wojcik was fourth on the uneven bars (9.9250) and sixth in the all-around (39.5875), while Heiskell tied for fifth on the uneven bars (9.9125) and placed seventh in the all-around (39.575).
In total U-M had six All-America performances with Brooks being named first team on the uneven bars and vault, Wojcik making first team on uneven bars and second team in the all-around, and Heiskell earning second team on the uneven bars and in the all-around. First-team honors go to places 1-4 (including ties) in the session and second-team recognition to places 5-8 (and ties).
U-M had its best rotation first on floor exercise with a 49.4875, which ranks third all-time in Michigan history at the NCAA Championships. Individually, Heiskell had three scores of 9.9000 or better, scoring a 9.9125 on the uneven bars and matching 9.9000s on both the balance beam and floor, while Brooks also totaled three scores of 9.9000 or higher with a 9.9000 on the floor.
Michigan put together a beautiful first rotation on the floor, counting four scores of 9.900 or better as Gabby Wilson and Wojcik paced the Wolverines with matching 9.9125s, and Brooks and Heiskell scored 9.9000s for the Maize and Blue. U-M led the field after one rotation, scoring a 49.4875, while Auburn was in second overall.
The Wolverines moved into second behind Auburn after two rotations, scoring a 49.4250 on the vault and carrying a running score of 98.9125. Brooks led Michigan with a 9.9000, and Reyna Guggino, Wilson and Wojcik all scored 9.8875s.
Heiskell started off the uneven bars rotation with a huge 9.9125, and Brooks followed in the fourth slot with a 9.9500, which earned her a tie for second place in the semifinal session. Wojcik placed fourth with her 9.9250, but the Wolverines had to count a fall in the third rotation and headed into the final rotation of the day in fourth place.
Heiskell paced U-M on the beam with a 9.9000, but again, the Wolverines were forced to count a fall and could not make up the deficit to get into the top two.
Florida and Auburn advanced to the team finals with scores of 197.9750 and 197.8375, respectively, while Missouri (197.2000) finished third in the session.
Michigan closed out the 2022 season with a 28-5 overall record. The Wolverines won their 26th Big Ten Conference championship in addition to the Big Ten regular-season title. U-M had 13 WCGA regular-season All-America nods and six All-America citations from the WCGA and sponsor GK.
