ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 3 ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team will make its 31st NCAA appearance when it travels to Raleigh, N.C., Thursday, March 31 to Saturday, April 2.
Joining the Wolverines at N.C. State will be No. 6 LSU, No. 11 Missouri, No. 14 UCLA, Maryland, host NC State, Iowa, Towson and UNC.
In the NCAA regional format, each of the four regional sites will feature four sessions over three days. The first round will take place Wednesday (March 30) at 3 p.m. with Towson competing against UNC for a spot in Thursday's evening session. Two second round sessions will take place on Thursday (March 31) with the afternoon session starting at 1 p.m., including LSU, Missouri, Iowa and NC State. The evening session will start at 7 p.m. and feature Michigan, UCLA and Maryland along with Wednesday's winner (Towson or UNC). The top two teams from each session on Thursday will advance to the regional final, which will take place on Saturday (April 2) at 5 p.m.
The top two teams from Saturday's final will advance to nationals. In addition, the top all-around gymnast (who is not on a qualifying team) and top individual on each event who is not part of a qualifying team or an all-around qualifier will advance to the national championships in that event only. The NCAA Championships are scheduled for Thursday and Saturday, April 14 & 16, in Fort Worth, Texas.
This marks the 30th consecutive year that head coach Bev Plocki has led the Wolverines to an NCAA appearance. They have gone on to advance to the NCAA Championship in 24 of the previous 30 seasons. Prior to Plocki, the Wolverines only competed in the NCAA Championship one time, winning the NCAA Regional and placing 10th overall in 1982.
The Wolverines eclipsed the 198 barrier on three occasions this season, earning a program-record 198.525 at Rutgers -- which ranks sixth all-time in NCAA history, -- and scoring the first 198+ in Big Ten Championship history with a 198.200 to capture its 26th Big Ten Championship. Michigan also recorded the second-highest vault score in NCAA history with a 49.875 and broke the U-M floor record with a 49.750.
The Wolverines enter the NCAA Regional with a RQS (Regional Qualifying Score) of 198.015 and are ranked in the top 15 on all four events, including leading the nation on the vault and floor. The team enters the regional with a 23-1 record and a two-meet win streak after winning the 2022 Big Ten Championship.
