
Michigan Collects Upset Win Over No. 2 Ohio State in Non-Conference Action

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team swept No. 2-ranked Ohio State, 4-0, on Friday evening (March 18) in a non-conference matchup at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Doubles was highly contested on all courts, with Michigan claiming the point with victories at Nos. 2 and 3. The combination of Ondrej Styler and Gavin Young got a break on the deuce to make it 3-1 before holding on for a 6-3 triumph at No. 2. At No. 3, the duo of Nick Beaty and Patrick Maloney clinched the doubles point for the Maize and Blue, breaking serve for a 6-4 victory.
In singles play, U-M was able to earn first-set wins at Nos. 2, 5 and 6. Beaty made solid work at No. 6, earning a 6-4, 6-4 win, before Styler put the Maize and Blue on the brink of the team win one court over at No. 2 with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph. Styler closed out the win with an ace on the deuce point to upset No. 8-ranked Cannon Kingsley.
No. 72-ranked Jacob Bickersteth clinched the match with an upset win (6-4, 6-4) over No. 26 James Trotter at No. 5 to hand the Buckeyes their first shutout loss since March 1, 2020.
No. 57-ranked Andrew Fenty jumped out to an early 4-0 lead over No. 5-ranked Matej Vocul at No. 1 but dropped six consecutive games to lose the set. He was able to bounce back in the second set with a 6-3 win and had taken the first game in the third before the match was clinched.
The victory was the second consecutive win for U-M against its longtime rival at home, after being held winless against the Buckeyes since 2001 prior to last season's win.
Michigan will be back at the Varsity Tennis Center on Sunday (March 20) when it plays host to No. 6 Baylor at 2 p.m. in a rematch of the 2019 NCAA second round.
