ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team earned its third straight win over a ranked team, knocking off No. 6 Baylor 4-0 on Sunday (March 20) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The match comes after the Wolverines topped No. 16 Columbia and No. 2 Ohio State earlier in the week -- all via shutout.
No. 72-ranked Jacob Bickersteth pushed Michigan ahead 2-0 with the first win in singles, claiming No. 5 in two sets, 6-1, 7-5, over Jake Bass.
Patrick Maloney had an incredible comeback win over No. 41 Sven Lah in defeating his highest ranked opponent. The senior cruised to a 6-2 win in the first set but found himself down 5-0 in the second. He put on an incredible rally to win the next six games to lead 6-5. Lah picked up the next game to push it to a tiebreaker. Maloney took off winning five of the first seven points, and he finished off Lah with a forehand to win 7-4 in the tiebreaker.
Nick Beaty clinched the victory at No. 6 singles, winning in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, over Juan Pablo Grassi as the Wolverines handed the Bears (17-2) just their second loss of the season.
Ondrej Styler's match at No. 1 was left unfinished while he was leading 7-6 (6), 5-3. His first set was a stunning victory in the tiebreaker as he and No. 42 Adrian Boitan went back and forth. No. 57 Andrew Fenty's match with No. 27 Matias Soto was even, after they split sets and stood at 3-3 before the match was called. Gavin Young won his first set 7-6 (7) and the second was at 2-4 before it was called.
Michigan took a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point as Styler and Young captured the 7-5 (5) win over Soto and Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi at No. 2. Baylor was up 5-3 on the court before the Wolverines rattled off three straight games to take a 6-5 edge. After the Bears evened it at 6, Styler and Young went on a five-point run in the seven-point tiebreak. Baylor made it interesting, winning two straight before Michigan was within one of the victory, 6-2. The Bears would not go away, winning the next two points before Young slammed down a forehand shot for the win.
Maloney and Beaty won at No. 3 doubles 6-4, while Fenty and Nino Ehrenschneider went down 6-3 at No. 1.
Michigan, now 10-2 on the season, will begin Big Ten Conference play next Friday (March 25) when it continues its five-match homestand against Nebraska at 4 p.m. at the Varsity Tennis Center.
