Ashley Lau finished as the top Wolverine, as her 219 (74-74-71) total gave her a seventh-place individual finish, while Monet Chun followed with her second straight top-15 finish, tying for 13th at 221 (74-72-75).
Wolverine Bites
• The Wolverine roster grew by one during the winter break as head coach Jan Dowling and her husband, Tien, welcomed Simon Richard to Ann Arbor on Jan. 17, 2022. With Dowling on leave, assistant coach AJ Newell has been handling the program duties for the Maize and Blue.
• Michigan welcomed back the services of graduate student Ashley Kim, who missed the fall season due to a thumb injury. She began the spring by tying for sixth (226) at the Tulane Classic -- one of three Wolverines among the top 10. She followed with a tie for 50th at the VyStar Gators Invitational but helped U-M to the team title. Kim is taking advantage of the NCAA rule to allow student-athletes an extra year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She has started 36 of her 37 career events and carries a 74.64 career scoring average.
• Ashley Lau and Hailey Borja continue their battle for the scoring lead. After her back-to-back wins at the Tulane Classic and VyStar Gators Invitational, Lau re-claimed the lead with her 72.00 average, with Borja just behind at 72.72. Combined, they have 11 of U-M's 17 sub-par rounds this season.
• As a team, U-M has posted a 291.22 team average with six sub-par team rounds, including a team-low (in relation to par) 279 (-9) in the second round of the Landfall Tradition and a team-low (by score) 276 (-4) in the third round of the VyStar Gators Invitational. U-M has 10 sub-290 team tallies. The lowest team average in program history is 295.56 (2015-16).
• Seven of eight Wolverines have posted an even- or sub-par score this season. Hailey Borja leads the team with six sub-par tallies, while Ashley Lau has five and Mikaela Schulz has four. Borja tied her career low with a 68 (-4) in the second round of the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational, while Schulz posted a new career low with her 67 (-5) in the second round of the Landfall Tradition. Lau set a career low with a 66 (-4) in the third round of the VyStar Gators Invitational.
• Michigan has four Big Ten Golfer of the Week accolades this season. Mikaela Schulz was named to the conference award recipient after she won the Wolverine Invitational with a 210 (-3) tally. Hailey Borja was given the honor after she led the Wolverines with a career-best 210 (-6) and tied for third at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational. Ashley Lau earned back-to-back honors after her four birdies paced her to a 71 (-1) in the final round of the Tulane Classic, helping her jump four spots to earn co-medalist honors (221), and then her career-best 66 (-4) in the final round helped her rally to win the VyStar Gators Invitational.
• Posting a career-low 210 (-3) tally, Mikaela Schulz earned the second medalist honor of her career, tying with Iowa State's Liyana Durisic at the Wolverine Invitational. Ashley Lau added her second title of her career as she rallied to earn co-medalist honors at the Tulane Classic. After a 66 (-4) in the final round of the VyStar Gators Invitational, Lau helped the Wolverines add a third individual trophy this season. The three trophies are the 33rd, 34th and 35th individual titles by a Wolverine as well as the sixth, seventh and eighth individual wins under U-M coach Jan Dowling.
• With the entire starting five finishing in the top 20 individually, U-M opened the 2021-22 season by winning the Wolverine Invitational with a U-M Golf Course women's team record 851 (-1) -- the first sub-par tally at U-M's home course. The 851 marked the second-lowest team total in program history and crushed the prior U-M Golf Course record by 18 shots -- 869 by USC at the 2007 NCAA Central Regional (May 10-12).
• The Wolverines added their second win when they rallied to share the VyStar Gators Invitational trophy. Led by a career performance and second straight medalist honor for senior Ashley Lau, the Wolverines used a final-round 276 (-4) to jump four spots and tie host Florida for the team title.
• Hailey Borja was invited to participate in the 2022 Augusta National Women's Amateur, March 30-April 2, played at the Island and Bluff nines at Champions Retreat Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. If she advances, she willl play a final round at the prestigious Augusta National.
