AURORA, Ontario -- Led by junior Thomasine Bartholdson for the second straight event, the University of Michigan women's golf team carded a closing 304 on Tuesday (Sept. 22) to finish eighth at the Canadian Collegiate Invitational at Beacon Hall Golf Club.
Michigan opened the event with a 309 before posting a 314 in Monday's second round to stand ninth with a 36-hole total of 623. The Wolverines responded with their best round of the tournament, a 304 (+16), on Tuesday to finish with a 54-hole total of 927 (+63). The 10-shot improvement from the second round helped U-M move up one spot in the final 11-team standings.
After opening the season with a runner-up finish at the Badger Invitational, Bartholdson continued her strong start with her second straight top-15 finish, tying for 11th at 224 (+8). Following an opening 78 (+6), she paced Michigan over the final 36 holes with a 72 and a 74.
In Tuesday's final round, Bartholdson rebounded from a 40 (+4) on the front nine with four consecutive birdies on holes 10 through 13. She came home in 34 (-2) and posted Michigan's low-counting score in each of the final two rounds.
Making her return from injury while competing as an individual, sophomore Vanessa Zhang made an immediate impact, tying for 15th at 225 (+9). She closed the tournament with an even-par 72 -- U-M's best score of the final round -- after opening with rounds of 77 and 76. Zhang recorded an eagle on the par-5 12th and added birdies on Nos. 4, 5 and 18 in her final round, securing her fourth top-20 finish in five career events.
Sophomore Reese Ng rebounded in the final round with a 75 (+3) and tied for 35th at 233 (78-80-75). Freshman Amanda Revuelta tied for 44th at 236 (74-83-79), while sophomore Jaymie Ng was 47th at 237 (79-82-76).
In a unique twist to the fall season, the Wolverines will travel alongside the U-M men's golf team to Dublin, Ohio, for the Barbara Nicklaus Cup, Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 5-6. Hosted by Ohio State at famed Muirfield Village, the four-team match-play event gives each program three matches, with the best overall record claiming the Nicklaus Cup. Michigan and Ohio State will be joined by Charlotte and Clemson.
