DUBLIN, Ohio -- Sophomore Jaymie Ng went unbeaten in two matches, sophomore Reese Ng added a win and a halve, and junior Thomasine Bartholdson posted a dominant 7-and-6 victory as the University of Michigan women's golf team opened play Monday (Oct. 5) at the Barbara Nicklaus Cup at Muirfield Village Golf Club.
The Wolverines opened the four-team match-play event with a narrow 4-2 loss to Clemson before falling 4-2 to host Ohio State in the afternoon. The Ngs finished the opening day 1-0-1, combining for two victories and two halves.
In the morning match against Clemson, Bartholdson wasted little time taking control against Ivy Schulze. After winning the opening hole, Bartholdson continued to pile up wins and built a commanding 7-up advantage through seven holes. Schulze was unable to cut into the deficit as Bartholdson closed out Michigan's first point with six holes remaining for the 7-and-6 victory.
Jaymie Ng provided the comeback of the morning. After falling 4-down through five holes against Annika Kohoutek, Ng steadily chipped away at the deficit. She eventually worked the match back to all square and carried it through the 18th hole to secure a halve and a half-point for the Wolverines.
Reese Ng also battled Julia Herzberg through all 18 holes before the two finished all square. Clemson claimed the other three matches, with Sarah Uebelhart defeating freshman Guia Acutis 2-up, Keya Naik topping freshman Amanda Revuelta 2-and-1, and Napajira Luesattha holding off sophomore Vanessa Zhang 1-up.
With three of the six matches reaching the 18th hole, the team decision remained in play late before Clemson secured the 4-2 victory.
Jaymie Ng carried that momentum into the afternoon against Ohio State, producing another comeback to defeat Amalie Tauer, 1-up. After falling 2-down through nine holes, Ng worked her way back and eventually squared the match at the 12th. She moved 1-up with a par on No. 14 before Tauer answered to even the match on the 15th.
Ng responded immediately, making birdie on the par-3 16th to regain the lead. She matched Tauer with pars on the final two holes to finish off the 1-up victory and complete an unbeaten 1-0-1 day.
Reese Ng supplied Michigan's second point against the Buckeyes with a 2-and-1 victory over Marina Joyce Moreno. Ng held a 1-up advantage from Nos. 9 through 13 before Moreno pulled even with a par on No. 14. After the match remained tied through the 15th, Ng made birdie on the par-3 16th to regain the advantage and closed out the match on No. 17.
Ohio State claimed the remaining four matches. Sophie Eppelstun defeated Acutis 5-and-3, while Matilde Santilli held off Revuelta 1-up. Revuelta battled back after falling 3-down through three holes and eventually pulled the match even before Santilli regained the advantage. Revuelta extended the match to the 18th hole before Santilli secured the 1-up win.
Meijin Song defeated Zhang 4-and-2, while Nellie Ong earned a 5-and-4 victory over Bartholdson to complete Ohio State's 4-2 team win.
For the day, Jaymie Ng and Reese Ng each posted 1-0-1 records, while Bartholdson's 7-and-6 victory against Clemson was Michigan's largest individual win of the opening two matches.
Michigan will close the Barbara Nicklaus Cup on Tuesday (Oct. 6), facing Charlotte in its final match beginning at 8:39 a.m. off the 10th tee.
