DUBLIN, Ohio -- Behind a pair of unbeaten performances from sophomores Jaymie Ng and Reese Ng and another victory from junior Thomasine Bartholdson, the University of Michigan women's golf team closed the Barbara Nicklaus Cup with a dominant 5-1 victory over Charlotte on Tuesday (Oct. 6) at Muirfield Village Golf Club.
After two narrow team losses Monday, Michigan left little doubt in its final match. Jaymie Ng and Reese Ng quickly put the Wolverines in command, combining to overwhelm their Charlotte opponents during the opening stretch. Jaymie jumped out to a 5-up advantage through five holes against Pimpunvadee Booncharn before eventually closing out a 5-and-4 victory.
Reese Ng was even more dominant against Ting Uang. She surged to a 6-up advantage through just four holes and never allowed Uang back into the match, finishing off a 6-and-4 win. The victories completed matching 2-0-1 records for the sophomores, who went unbeaten over Michigan's three matches against Clemson, Ohio State and Charlotte.
Sophomore Vanessa Zhang added another decisive point for the Wolverines, defeating Emma Heyman 3-and-1, while freshman Guia Acutis earned her first victory of the event with a 1-up decision over Gracie Song, who withdrew from the event.
With Michigan firmly in control of the team match, Bartholdson supplied the closing drama. One day after cruising to a 7-and-6 victory against Clemson's Ivy Schulze, Bartholdson found herself in a much different battle against Caroline Johnson. The match remained competitive throughout the round, forcing Bartholdson to play the full 18 holes before securing a 1-up victory.
The win gave Bartholdson a 2-1 record at Muirfield Village and capped a tournament in which her two victories came at opposite ends of the match-play spectrum -- one ending with six holes remaining and the other requiring every hole.
Michigan finished the Barbara Nicklaus Cup with a 1-2 team record, while host Ohio State went 3-0 to claim the event. Charlotte and Clemson also finished 1-2.
Returning to tournament play, the Wolverines will head to the West Coast for another highly competitive event at the Stanford Intercollegiate. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will feature a strong field competing at Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif.
