ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 1-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team clinched the Big Ten regular-season championship for the seventh time in program history with a score of 197.950 Friday night (Feb. 18) at the 2022 Big Five Meet hosted by the Elevate the Stage event at Huntington Center.
U-M last earned the Big Ten regular-season in 2020 and has now won it seven times since it was instituted by the conference in 2013.
The Wolverines defeated No. 17 Iowa, No. 22 Ohio State, Illinois and Maryland, taking home four of the five individual titles. Junior Gabby Wilson put together one her best career showings, starting off the meet with a 9.975 on floor exercise before moving to vault and earning her second title with another 9.975.
Sophomore Reyna Guggino shared the vault title with Wilson, scoring a 9.975, while senior Natalie Wojcik scored a 9.950 to take home the uneven bars titles and classmate Abby Heiskell was the all-around winner with a 39.475.
After a bye in the first rotation, Michigan got to work on floor. Senior Abby Brenner led off with a 9.900 before sophomore Naomi Morrison scored a 9.925 on the floor. U-M concluded the rotation with a 9.950 from junior Sierra Brooks and a huge 9.975 from Wilson to post a team score of 49.625.
Guggino picked up where Wilson left off, sticking her vault and scoring a 9.975 before Wilson scored her second 9.975 of the evening to lead Michigan to a 49.500 team score and a running score of 99.125.
Brenner had a solid day for the Maize and Blue, scoring a 9.925 on uneven bars to close out her night. Wilson followed it up with a 9.950, which also closed out her events for the night. Michigan had five scores of 9.900 or better on uneven bars, with Heiskell and Brooks earning matching 9.900s, and Wojcik anchored with a 9.950 to take the title.
With one rotation remaining, Michigan used a team-high 9.900 from Heiskell on the beam, which locked up her all-around victory and also the team win.
Michigan hits the road next Saturday, Feb. 26, when it takes on Nebraska at 3:30 CST on Big Ten Network.
