STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team scored 10 goals in the second half, but they were not enough as the Wolverines' season come to a close after a 16-13 loss to No. 13-ranked Maryland on Thursday night (April 29) in the Big Ten Tournament at Panzer Stadium on the campus of Penn State.
The Wolverines came out of the halftime break outscoring the Terrapins 10-4 in the final 30 minutes but could not overcome their first half deficit.
Graduate student Molly Garrett and senior Caitlin Muir each scored four goals, while Muir added an assist. Also scoring multiple goals for U-M were Nadine Stewart and Kaitlyn Mead, who had two goals each.
Mead added five draw-control wins and Garrett had four, while Quinn Melidona had three ground balls and Maggie Kane had one assist, two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
The Wolverines were the first to get on the scoreboard before the Terrapins responded with two straight goals. Garrett knotted the score at 2 with a free-position rip, but again UMD had a response, rattling off eight straight goals and taking a 10-2 lead with just under five minutes to play in the first half.
Mead cut into the Maryland lead with Michigan's second free-position goal of the game, but the Terrapins scored two final goals in the closing minutes of the half to take a 12-3 advantage into the halftime break.
In the second half, the Terrapins scored first to start a running clock. Michigan started a comeback with four straight goals to cut the UMD lead to six, 13-7, with 16:26 left in the game.
Michigan continued its rally, scoring three straight goals in the closing four minutes of the game, but it would not be enough as the Wolverines could not overcome their first-half deficit.
U-M concludes its season with a 3-9 overall record and were ranked in the top 25 in all but one week the entire season.
