OAK RIDGE, Tenn. -- In a bounce-back effort, the No. 3-ranked University of Michigan rowing team won all three races during Sunday's (March 14) final day of competition at the Cardinal Invitational on Lake Melton. The team responded from a run of close second-place finishes during Saturday's races by winning its races handily today.
After lining up with No. 7 Virginia, No. 11 Indiana, and No. 12 Wisconsin on Saturday, the Wolverines faced another ranked opponent in No. 16 SMU on Sunday, along with host Louisville. The team stuck with its Saturday afternoon lineups and it proved to be the right decision with fast boats up and down the U-M lineup.
The 1V8 set the tone for the morning with a time of 6:22.281, crossing 2.709 seconds ahead of the Mustangs with the Cardinals in third. Both the 2V8 (6:32.773) and the 1V4 (7:07.628) improved on their times from the Saturday a.m. session in their victories.
After a pair of photo finishes in Saturday's races, the 1V4 boat had its widest margin of victory all weekend with the second-place Mustangs boat coming in 12.397 seconds behind the Wolverines.
After a win from the 2V8, the Sunday sweep was complete and the Wolverines will leave Oak Ridge on a high note. The Maize and Blue has a weekend off competition before returning to action in Columbus, Ohio, where they'll race against the Buckeyes of Ohio State on Saturday, March 27.
