COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan rowing program collected 12 of a possible 14 wins during a two-session regatta on Saturday (March 27) at Griggs Reservoir. Traveling a full championship lineup (two varsity eights, three varsity fours, two novice eights) for the first time this year, the Wolverines displayed a strong performance against some of the top programs in the conference and nation, including three ranked programs.
In the morning session, U-M swept all seven races. The 1V8 boat had the chance to race against No. 10 Indiana two weeks after finishing 3.184 seconds behind the Hoosiers during the morning session in Oak Ridge, Tenn. This time around, the Wolverines earned a win with a time of 6:41.1, more than four seconds ahead of Indiana with No. 15 Iowa in third. Even with that significant margin of victory, the 1V8's win was the smallest by any varsity boat throughout the first set of races.
The 2V8 also lost to the Hoosiers in Tennessee but came back full-force today with a time of 6:48.82 to beat IU by 11.72 seconds with Iowa in third. The 1V4 timed 7:31.3 and also beat IU and Iowa in that order, crossing 11.702 seconds ahead of Indiana.
U-M's novice boats also took the water for the first time as Wolverines this season. The 1N8 crossed 19.41 seconds ahead of Iowa with the Hoosiers in third. The 3V4 boat beat Ohio State by 23.37 seconds with Iowa in third. The Wolverine 2V4 and 2N8 boats raced only against Iowa. The four boat beat Iowa by 23.99 seconds and the novice boat won by 1.9 seconds in the first race of the day.
In the afternoon races, the Maize and Blue lined up against No. 7 Ohio State in all seven events and against Michigan State in four of those. The 1V8 event closed out the day, but it was the Buckeyes crossing the finish line first in 6:59.82 with the Wolverines 7.67 seconds behind at 7:07.49 and Michigan State in third at 7:33.39. Michigan's 2V8 was victorious by a similar margin as the Buckeyes' top boat, posting a 6:59.8 of their own while OSU came in at 7:05.98 and the Spartans in third. That gave the 2V8 wins over all four Big Ten foes in Columbus this weekend, a strong showing.
U-M's three varsity fours each collected wins in the afternoon, highlighted by the 1V4 winning the closest race of the day as they edged out the Buckeyes by 1.95 seconds. The 2V4's win was a slightly more comfortable one (+8.01 seconds) and the 3V4 cruised to a win by 38.59 seconds on Ohio State and 1:22.2 over Iowa. U-M's first novice eight was victorious at 7:16.97 and the 2N8 finished second.
The Wolverines return to Columbus next Saturday (April 3) to match up with highly-ranked ACC foes No. 3 Virginia and No. 11 Duke.
