Wolverine Notes
• Junior Naz Hillmon won the Big Ten, ESPN and USBWA Ann Meyers Drysdale National Player of the Week awards after recording a pair of double-doubles in Michigan's two wins last week. In a two-point win over Nebraska (Jan. 7), Hillmon recorded the second 30-20 game in program history with career bests of 35 points and 22 rebounds. It was the second 30-20 game nationally this season and the first by a Big Ten student-athlete since Jan. 24, 2016. She followed that up with a 24-point, 13-rebound performance in U-M's 20-point win over Illinois (Jan. 10). For the week, she averaged 29.5 points and 17.5 rebounds per game. Hillmon leads the Big Ten in double-doubles with seven on the season. It was the third Big Ten weekly honor of her career and the second time she had been selected by ESPN.
• Michigan moved up to No. 13 in the latest Associated Press poll (Jan. 11) with 400 points, the highest Michigan has been ranked since coming in at No. 13 on Jan. 29, 2018. The highest U-M has ever been ranked in the AP poll was No. 12 on Dec. 24, 2001. The No. 13 ranking matches the highest ranking in the AP poll for a Kim Barnes Arico-coached team. KBA coached the Wolverines when they were ranked No. 13 in 2018 and was at St. John's when the Red Storm was ranked No. 13 on March 5, 2012. U-M is at No. 12 in this week's USA Today Coaches Poll.
• The Wolverines are out to a 9-0 start for the first time in program history, with the previous best being 7-0. Michigan's nine-game win streak also is the third-longest in program history. The program record for consecutive wins is 10, which happened during the 2001-02 and 2012-13 seasons. Michigan's 4-0 Big Ten record also ties its best start to conference play, which also occurred during the 2012-13 season. U-M has never stood at 5-0 in league play.
• U-M is wrapping up a two-game series against Wisconsin after grabbing a 92-49 win over the Badgers on Dec. 31. U-M had four double-figure scorers in the game, getting 26 from Leigha Brown, 22 from Naz Hillmon, 15 from Amy Dilk and 13 from Akienreh Johnson. U-M shot 51.5 percent from the field and held a 50-29 edge on the glass. Wisconsin is the first team Michigan is playing for a second time this season.
• Wisconsin is coming off a 74-49 loss at Indiana on Sunday (Jan. 10). The Badgers have a pair of double-figure scorers in Sydney Hilliard (19.4 ppg) and Imani Lewis (12.3 ppg). UW is averaging 69.0 points per game on 43.3 percent shooting while allowing 77.4 points per game on 41.8 percent shooting. This is the fifth straight season that U-M has played in Madison. Michigan has won the last nine against the Badgers.
