ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- It was a blockbuster "Day at the Movies" for the No. 8-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team as it received two thumbs up in a 197.350-195.900 win over Ohio State in front of 7,105 fans on Sunday evening (Feb. 9) at Crisler Center.
"It's incredible," sophomore Abby Brenner said of the team's 5-0 start in the Big Ten. "This team is really something special. We've got a lot of talent, and it's exciting to see us build and build and build. We still have a lot more to do, but it's good to get a few under the belt."
The team was uplifted by the second-largest crowd in Michigan women's gymnastics history, and its final score was the highest of the season. The score was the product of season highs on three of the four events.
The Wolverines (6-0, 4-0 Big Ten) came out of the gate scoring a season-high 49.350 in their first rotation on the vault. Michigan gymnasts took the top four spots in the event, including a first-place finish from Sierra Brooks. The freshman scored a 9.975, which tied for the third highest in the NCAA this season, to win the vault for the first time in her career. Brenner scored a 9.900, sticking her vault for a second straight week.
U-M also set a season-high team score with a 49.375 on uneven bars. Brooks and sophomore Natalie Wojcik tied for the bars title with a pair of 9.925s in the second rotation. The score was a season best for both gymnasts, and the win was Wojcik's second of the season. Brooks claimed her first bars victory to give her wins on every event except vault this year.
The Maize and Blue scored its best on floor exercise with a team score of 49.525, Michigan's highest of any rotation in any meet this season. The Wolverines rattled off four straight scores of 9.900 or better in an exciting finish to a great meet. Freshman Gabby Wilson led the way with a career-high 9.950 and Brenner also set a career high with a 9.925. Brooks and Wojcik each added 9.900s.
"Floor is one of my favorite events because I love the fans here at Crisler," Brenner said. "They buy into our floor routines and they just love to be here, so going out there and giving it my all and then getting that score was extremely fun."
Michigan scored a 49.100 on the balance beam. Senior Lexi Funk, who was honored after the meet in senior recognition, matched her season high in the event with a 9.900. Wojcik finished off the rotation by tying her career high with a 9.950 that was good enough to take home the beam title. Sunday was the second time this season and the sixth time in her career that Wojcik won on beam.
Wojcik has won the all-around in two straight meets at Crisler Center, topping all competitors with a score of 39.625. It was the second time this season and the ninth time in her career that she scored better than 39.600, leaving her just one 39.600 short of second place all-time in the Michigan record books.
Michigan will be on the road for a Valentines Day meet this Friday (Feb. 14) when the Wolverines take on Iowa in a conference meet at 6 p.m. CST in Iowa City.
