SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A pair of sprinters moved up in the University of Michigan men's track and field history books as the Wolverines concluded the first of two days of competition at the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational on Friday (Feb. 7).
True freshman Josh Zeller moved up to No. 2 in school history in the 60-meter hurdles and Ian Davis debuted in the 600 meters at No. 7 in school history.
Zeller threw down one of the fastest times in Michigan history in just the first of three rounds of competition in the hurdles, clocking 7.86 to take the field's top spot in the preliminary rounds. He was one of three Wolverine heat winners, joined by Roland Amarteifio and Sierra Hendrix-Williams, who ran 8.02 and 8.20 for the third- and ninth-fastest prelims times, respectively.
In the history of the 60-meter hurdles at Michigan -- which dates back primarily to the mid-2000s after the NCAA switched from the 55-meter distance to the 60-meter length -- only two-time Olympian, NCAA champion and school record-holder Jeff Porter has run faster than Zeller as a freshman. Porter clocked 7.82 in 2004 to win the Big Ten title.
Overall, Zeller's time is tied for the 15th-fastest performance in school history, behind 14 of Porter's fastest times. He now stands alone as the second-fastest performer in school history, breaking a tie with teammate Amarteifio and Carl Buchanon (2011).
He is joined in the U-M record books by Davis, a 400-meter specialist who stepped up to 600 meters for Friday's action and came away with a 1:19.01 performance. The time was the fastest run by a Wolverine in the past four seasons, and was good for ninth overall.
In the flat 60-meter race, Asani Hampton also advanced through to Saturday's semifinals with a season's best time of 6.83. The performance was good for sixth-best in the field on the day.
In the longer distances, Tom Brady excelled with a career-best effort at 5,000 meters in 14:32.92. The time was good for fifth overall as he shaved five seconds off his previous best.
In the field, the Wolverines got a pair of top-10 finishes from seventh-place triple jumper Daniel Butael and eighth-place pole vaulter Eric Harris.
The hurdles trio will get in the blocks for the semifinals at 9:55 a.m. on Saturday, with Hampton up shortly thereafter at 10:10 a.m., to kick off the second and final day of the Meyo Invitational.
