SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team racked up six top-five finishes on the final day of action at the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 8).
Roland Amarteifio and Sierra Hendrix-Williams were second and third, respectively, in the overall 60-meter hurdles final, with Cole Johnson, Ben Hill, Ian Davis and Will Landowne all picking up top-five finishes in unseeded sections of their respective events -- including a win for Johnson at 800 meters.
Amarteifio clocked 7.98 to finish runner-up by just .04 of a second, with teammate Hendrix-Williams just behind him in 8.05 -- his best time of the weekend through the three rounds -- to finish third.
The performance is Amarteifio's fifth of his career faster than eight seconds, and comes a week earlier in the schedule than his first-ever sub-8.00 run in 2019.
Josh Zeller, who ran the meet's fastest 60-meter hurdles time with his 7.86 from the preliminaries on Friday, did not start in the final.
Johnson was Michigan's top finisher in the unseeded sections of track events, winning the 800-meter competition in a career-best 1:50.71. In dropping his career best by just over a full second, Johnson became the 14th man in school history to run faster than 1:51 indoors for the 800-meter distance (excluding 880-yard conversions).
Hill was third in 1:51.66, winning the first section of the event before being overtaken for the overall win by Johnson and one other competitor in the second section. Hill claimed his heat by just .04 of a second.
After cracking the all-time top-10 at 600 meters on Friday night (Feb. 7), Davis nearly repeated the feat for 400 meters on Saturday. With a third-place 47.80 that lowered his career best by .04, he moved up to No. 11 in school history.
With his 1:19.01 over 600 meters from Friday, he now joins All-Americans Trinity Townsend and Omar Davidson as the only men in school history to run sub-48.00 at 400 meters and sub-1:20.00 at 600.
Landowne turned in an impressive 2020 in-uniform debut, slashing nearly nine seconds from his personal-record mile time to finish fifth in the unseeded sections at 4:06.38. He was one of five Michigan milers to record new personal bests on the day.
Michigan will split up three ways next weekend, with distance runners heading to Iowa State, sprinters and jumpers competing at Arkansas and throwers traveling to Vanderbilt.
