AMES, Iowa -- Distance runner Devin Meyrer made Michigan indoor history on the first day of the Iowa State Classic on Friday (Feb. 14) at Lied Recreation Center.
Meyrer became the 11th man in school history to run faster than 14 minutes for 5,000 meters during the indoor season, clocking 13:56.80 to take seventh in the invitational section of the event.
After sticking with the leaders early, he began to drift from the front about midway through. After coming through halfway at sub-13:50 pace, he appeared to be at risk of being bypassed by the chase pack that had reconnected with him. Meyrer rallied and never fell farther than two spots back into that secondary group, keeping himself on track for a quick time.
At the conclusion of the race, he chopped nearly 12 seconds off of his previous career best and had moved to No. 9 in school history on the indoor list.
In the non-invitational sections of the 5,000 meters, Jacob Lee posted a career-best 14:15.13 to finish 13th overall.
Action at the Iowa State Classic will resume on Saturday (Feb. 15) just after 1 p.m. CST.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Michigan's sprint and hurdles corps turned in several historic and season-best performances to kick off the first of two days at the Arkansas Tyson Invitational on Friday (Feb. 14) at Randall Tyson Track Center.
Ian Davis ran an incremental career best over 400 meters for the second consecutive weekend, this time improving his best by .02 seconds to go 47.78. He needed the extra boost in speed to get the win in his section, as he trailed Minnesota's Elliot Davis coming off the final turn with about 40 meters to go. Davis swung wide off the curve, charged past the Golden Gopher in lane two and beat him to the line by .13 seconds.
The performance was quick enough to move him into a tie for No. 10 in school history with Michael Parker and his time from the 2012 Big Ten Indoor Championships.
Michigan's national-caliber 60-meter hurdles squad competed at the same meet in its entirety for the first time in 2020, posting some strong results along the way. Josh Zeller and Roland Amarteifio just missed the eight-man final with identical 7.94 performances for 10th and 11th overall, respectively. For Amarteifio, the effort was a season best, while Zeller also clocked 7.93 in the qualifying round.
Sierra Hendrix-Williams and Job Mayhue were 15th and 17th in 8.06 and 8.11, respectively. Mayhue ran a superior 8.03 in the qualifying rounds.
Action will resume at Arkansas on Saturday (Feb. 15) at 11:30 a.m. CST.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Manning Plater captured a come-from-behind victory in the weight throw to headline the first day of action at the Vanderbilt Music City Challenge on Friday (Feb. 14) at the Vanderbilt Multipurpose Facility.
In what was his third victory of the 2020 indoor campaign, Manning took the title with a near-personal-record 21.63m (70 feet, 11.5 inches) effort in the fourth round, defeating another potential NCAA Championships qualifier in Logan Kusky of Notre Dame by nearly a full meter.
Plater trailed by four centimeters entering the final three throws, but quickly turned that around with his best of the day.
Action at Vanderbilt will resume at 1:50 p.m. CST on Saturday (Feb. 15).
