ANN ARBOR -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team closed out its 2020 indoor home schedule with a successful outing at the Silverston Invitational on Friday (Feb. 21).
The Wolverines racked up four event wins on the day as sprinters Joe McCarthy and Noah Caudy, and distance runners Thomas Shilgalis and Will Landowne all emerged victorious in their respective events.
Friday's meet provided one final opportunity for competition ahead of the Big Ten Championships next Friday and Saturday (Feb. 28-29) in Geneva, Ohio. A select few of the athletes who competed at the Silverston are expected to make the Wolverines' postseason roster.
Landowne led a 1-2-3-4-5 finish by the Michigan men at 3,000 meters, crossing the line first in 8:18.44. Tom Brady, Nick Trevisan, Dominic Dimambro and Joost Plaetinck were all within two and a half seconds of one another, led by the runner-up Brady in 8:26.11. Brady, Trevisan (8:26.60) and Dimambro (8:28.16) all posted personal bests.
In the 800 meters, Shilgalis and Evan Meyer teamed up for a one-two sweep for the Wolverines. Shilgalis closed strong to take the win in 1:53.42, while Meyer clocked a career-best 1:54.04 to emerge at the head of a chase group from second through fifth that was separated by less than a second. Also in that group was Luke Wallace in a career-best 1:54.25 for fourth.
Caudy also came through victorious in a close finish as he ran a career-best 1:22.96 to take the 600-meter title by .02 of a second.
McCarthy's victory was a bit more comfortable, despite the shorter distance. He clocked 21.89 to win his section by two-thirds of a second and earned the overall victory over the section two winner by .06 of a second.
Those winners, along with the six top-five finishers in those two distance events, were among 15 top-five finishers on the day for the Wolverines.
Desmond Melson came close to joining his victorious teammates, but was edged out at the finish line by .002 of a second as he ran 49.77 for second place at 400 meters.
Tuning up for what will be his collegiate postseason debut in the heptathlon at Big Tens next weekend, Heath Baldwin twice lowered his personal record in the 60-meter hurdles en route to an overall runner-up finish. He first ran 8.17 in the prelims to chop .13 off his best, then one-upped himself in the final with an 8.11.
Also finishing runner-up was pole vaulter Eric Harris. The first-year transfer made it over at 4.73m (15 feet, 6.25 inches) on his second attempt.
Additional top-five finishes came from third-place Cassidy Henshaw in the high jump, fourth-place Anthony DeKraker in the mile and fifth-place Sean Marshall at 600 meters.
The distance medley relay team will conclude Michigan's 2020 indoor regular season on Saturday (Feb. 22) at 11:35 a.m. at the Notre Dame Alex Wilson Invitational.
