ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team will host Rutgers on Friday (Jan. 24) at 6:30 p.m. inside Crisler Center in the Wolverines' fifth annual Flip for Chip meet honoring the life of the late Chip Hills, father of former Michigan gymnast Cailee Hills. The meet will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
Flip for Chip Meet
• Michigan will host Rutgers in its annual Flip for Chip meet Friday (Jan. 24) at 6:30 p.m.
• The Wolverines have a 4-0 record in Flip for Chip meets and have been inspired to some of their top scores each season. The best was a 197.825 against Southern Utah in 2017. Two wins have come over Michigan State in 2016 (197.225) and 2018 (197.250).
• U-M is 16-0 all-time against Rutgers, including a 4-0 mark at home. The last time the Scarlet Knights visited Ann Arbor was 2015 for the Big Ten Championship.
Promotions
• Flip for Chip -- Join the Michigan Women's Gymnastics team in their fifth annual Flip for Chip Meet as we honor the life of Chip Hills, father of former Michigan gymnast Cailee Hills.
• Postmeet Autographs -- Meet your favorite gymnasts as select members of the team will be signing autographs on the concourse following the meet, and be sure to pick up their official trading card during their autograph session.
• Senior Recognition -- Join us prior to the meet as we honor senior Maggie O'Hara.
Last Time Out
• Michigan improved to 3-0 on the season with a 196.700-195.650 victory at Illinois to open the Big Ten schedule last Saturday (Jan. 18).
• U-M hit on all 24 of its routines in the meet.
• The Wolverines won or shared event titles on all four events and the all-around.
• Freshman Sierra Brooks won the all-around with a 39.500, while also capturing titles on balance beam (9.900) and floor exercise (9.900).
• Senior Lexi Funk shared the beam title with her first 9.900 of the season.
• Freshman Gabby Wilson won vault for the second straight week with a 9.875.
• Sophomore Abby Heiskell led off uneven bars with a career-high 9.875 for her first collegiate event title.
In the Rankings
• Michigan climbed seven spots in the Road to Nationals rankings to No. 9 after a successful road meet at Illinois.
• U-M remains one of the top teams nationally on vault at No. 3 and is No. 8 on bars for a second straight week.
• On the other events, Michigan moved up 12 spots on beam to No. 35 and is ranked 13th on floor.
• Five individuals appear in the top 50 nationally. Gabby Wilson is tied for eight on vault and tied for 33rd on bars. Brooks is ranked on vault (T-24th), beam (T-19th) and the all-around (T-36th). Sophomore Natalie Wojcik is ranked on vault (T-39th), floor (T-27th) and the all-around (T-34th). Sophomores Maddie Mariani (T-31st on vault) and Heiskell (T-16th on bars) also are ranked.
• U-M was ranked No. 6 in the preseason poll and was the Big Ten coaches' preseason favorite to win the conference crown.
College Debuts
• Freshman Nicoletta Koulos made her collegiate debut at Illinois on vault and floor.
• Brooks and Wilson each made their college debuts for Michigan in the season opener and earned event titles.
• Brooks competed in the all-around with a top score of 9.875 on vault and beam.
• Wilson was in the lineup for three events with wins on vault and bars.
Freshmen Wins
• Brooks and Wilson have combined for seven event and all-around victories through just two meets this season.
• Brooks has won beam in both meets and added victories on floor and the all-around at Illinois.
• Wilson is a two-time vault champion while also winning bars in her debut.
Sophomore Stars
• The Michigan sophomore class was ranked the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation and is having a great second year on campus.
• Abby Brenner has competed on vault and floor, scoring a 9.850 on both in the opener.
• Heiskell competed on only one event (bars) at Illinois but it was a career-high 9.875 for her first collegiate event title.
• Mariani got off to a great start with a 9.875 on vault and a 9.850 on bars in the season-opening meet. She then stuck her vault for a 9.825 at Illinois.
• Wojcik won floor with a 9.900 in the opener and had three 9.850 routines at Illinois.
Home Slate
• The Wolverines have four home meets remaining in 2020, including this weekend's Flip for Chip Meet. The next home meet on the calendar will be Sunday, Feb. 9 at 4 p.m. when Ohio State comes to Ann Arbor for a "Day at the Movies" meet.
