ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team will host rivals Michigan State and Ohio State in front of a live national television audience on Big Ten Network this Saturday (Jan. 18) at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational.
The scored triangular meet -- the only such regular-season meet for all three teams this year -- will pit the Wolverines, Spartans and Buckeyes against one another inside the confines of the world-class U-M Indoor Track Building starting at 10:15 a.m.
Live television coverage of the competition on Big Ten Network will begin at 11 a.m., and will run through the conclusion of the meet at 2:30 p.m.
Fans who attend the meet in person are encouraged to wear their maize-colored clothing to participate in U-M's first-ever "Maize Out" track and field meet. The first 300 fans will also receive a free maize T-shirt to mark the occasion.
The competition will be the second of the Wolverines' nascent 2020 indoor campaign, as they aim to build on a strong season opener last Saturday and get their first taste of Big Ten opposition.
Olympic hopeful shot putter Andrew Liskowitz will officially kick off his senior season on Saturday, leading a Michigan roster that will contend with Michigan State and Ohio State both on the track and throughout the field.
Joining Liskowitz among the field event headliners are Wolverine Invitational shot put winner John Meyer and 2019 Big Ten-scoring high jumper Max Wagner.
The 2019 outdoor All-American 4x400 relay team of Desmond Melson, Ian Davis, Alex Schwedt and Vail Hartman will join forces for the first time in 2020 this weekend. Also among the Wolverines' top entries in the track events are the dynamic hurdles corps of Roland Amarteifio, Sierra Hendrix-Williams, Job Mayhue and Josh Zeller; a talented mid-distance group featuring aspiring sub-four miler Ben Hill and top-ranked high school miler Nick Foster; and 2019 Big Ten-scoring sprinter Asani Hampton.
Those men will lead the Wolverines' efforts to top MSU and OSU atop the team scoring leaderboard at meet's end.
In each of the 15 individual and relay events contested throughout the meet, student-athletes will earn points for their teams corresponding to their finishing place. Individual event winners will get seven points for their teams, with second place receiving five, third earning four, fourth receiving three, fifth earning two and sixth receiving one.
Only two entries per team are eligible to score in each individual event. Each teams' third-place-and-lower finishers will not score, and their points will be deferred to the next eligible finisher from either Michigan State or Ohio State.
In the 4x400 relay, only one squad from each school will score, with the fastest school earning seven points, the second-fastest school getting five points and the third-fastest receiving four.
The meet can be followed by way of live results from Delta Timing and updates from the official Michigan Track and Field social media accounts on Twitter and Instagram.
Team Outlook and Notes
• Season Preview
• The Wolverines, led by head coaches Jerry Clayton and James Henry, will enter the season ranked No. 44 nationally in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Preseason National Track and Field Rating Index (TFRI).
• The Wolverines finished eighth at the 2019 Big Ten Indoor Championships, scoring 52 points. With defending shot put champion Andrew Liskowitz leading nine more returning individual scorers from a year ago, the Wolverines put 34 of those points back on the board in 2020. The Wolverines' relay teams -- 4x400 and distance medley -- also scored seven points, with the 4x4 squad having earned outdoor second team All-America honors since last winter. Both teams return three of four members from their 2019 Big Ten roster, with many additional parts to fill the voids.
• Returning All-Americans: Liskowitz (indoor and outdoor shot put); the quartet of Desmond Melson, Ian Davis, Alex Schwedt and Vail Hartman (outdoor 4x400 relay); Jack Aho and Devin Meyrer (cross country)
• Returning Big Ten Indoor Championships scorers: Aho (3,000 meters); Roland Amarteifio (60-meter hurdles); Anthony Berry (800 meters); Daniel Butael (triple jump); Asani Hampton (60 meters); Sierra Hendrix-Williams (60-meter hurdles); Ben Hill (mile); Will Landowne (3,000 meters); Liskowitz (shot put champion); and Job Mayhue (60-meter hurdles)
• Current school record-holders: Liskowitz (indoor and outdoor shot put)
• Liskowitz will make his 2020 debut on Saturday, beginning his journey toward Big Ten, NCAA and potentially Olympic accomplishments in his final year at Michigan. After an incendiary 2019 summer campaign, the reigning Big Ten Indoor shot put champion has already reached the qualifying standard for the Tokyo Olympics.
• He will team up with sophomore John Meyer to form one of the nation's top shot put duos. Meyer opened his 2020 season with a Wolverine Invitational victory and a career-best 18.79m (61 feet, 7.75 inches) that ranks him 18th nationally at present.
• Teammate Manning Plater was also in career-best form in his weight throw opener last Saturday (Jan. 11), exceeding his previous bests four times en route to a 20.69m (67-10.75) heave that ranks him 17th nationally.
• Michigan had three finalists in the 2019 Big Ten Indoor Championships 60-meter hurdles final. Two of those men debuted at the Wolverine Invitational as Job Mayhue went 8.07 and Sierra Hendrix-Williams went 8.09, both ranked top-100 nationally. They will be joined this weekend by the No. 2 hurdler in school history in aspiring Ghanain Olympic hopeful Roland Amarteifio and by European U20 110-meter hurdles champion Josh Zeller in his Michigan debut.
• Ben Hill and Nick Foster will compete in-uniform for the first time this year -- and the first time ever during the track season for Foster -- as they race at 800 meters to gear up for runs at sub-four-minute miles later this season. They will be joined by last year's Simmons-Harvey Invitational winner Cole Johnson, himself gearing up for fast times later this season.
• Melson, Davis, Schwedt and Hartman will team up for the first time this year in the 4x400 relay after a remarkable run to close out the 2019 outdoor season. Seeded second-to-last of 24 teams at the NCAA East Prelims, the Wolverines advanced to nationals with a 12th-place finish and a lean at the line by Hartman. At NCAAs, again seeded 23rd, the quartet raced to a 14th-place effort for second team All-America plaudits.
