ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Sarah Stratigakis scored her second straight game-winning goal for the University of Michigan women's soccer team as her second-half tally lifted the Wolverines to a 2-1 victory over Purdue on Friday night (Sept. 27) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
U-M remains perfect in Big Ten contests as it moved to 3-0 in league play and earned its fourth straight win to improve to 8-2-0 overall.
Stratigakis netted her third game-winner of the season and second in as many games when she fired a free kick pass from Raleigh Loughman into the back of the net in the 70th minute. Loughman also scored the first goal of the match and earned her fourth multi-point match of the season.
Freshman Jayde Riviere notched her first collegiate point when she assisted on Loughman's goal and Hillary Beall earned the win in net making two saves on the evening. Michigan outshot Purdue, 14-7, while it put six shots on goal; Purdue put only two shots on frame.
Coming off the opening kick, Riviere dribbled the ball into the right corner of the field before finding Loughman at the top of the 18-yard box on a cross. Loughman drove the one-time shot into the bottom-right corner of the goal to give Michigan a 1-0 lead 49 seconds into the half.
The Wolverines followed the goal with two shots on target over the next six minutes, including Hannah Blake firing a shot, which forced the Purdue keeper to backpedal and make a jumping fingertip save.
Purdue put one shot on goal that Beall easily scooped up and kept the one-goal Michigan advantage stand up. U-M outshot the Boilermakers, 9-4, in the first half and took four shots on goal.
Both teams started off slow offensively in the second half, with no shots taken in the first five minutes. A Purdue foul 23 yards out in the 70th minute proved costly as Loughman took the free kick, which went straight up the middle of the box and onto the foot of Stratigakis, who buried the ball into the left corner of the net from six yards out to put the Wolverines up, 2-0.
Purdue halved its deficit in the 81st minute when a cross went off of a Michigan defender and into the back of the net for an own goal. The Boilermakers took one final shot in the last nine minutes of play that was high and wide and the Wolverines held on for the victory.
U-M will return to action in Ann Arbor on Sunday (Sept. 29) at 1 p.m. when the Wolverines host their Ovarian Cancer Awareness game at U-M Soccer Stadium. The match will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
