ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team remained unbeaten in Big Ten action after they played Indiana to a scoreless draw Sunday afternoon (Sept. 29) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Wolverines move to 8-2-1 overall, 3-0-1 in the Big Ten standings and extended their unbeaten streak to six games.
U-M outshot Indiana, 22-8, with six shots on frame compared to the Hoosiers' four. Freshman Hannah Blake led Michigan with two shots on net, while Hillary Beall made four saves on the afternoon.
The Wolverines and Hoosiers were unable to generate much offense in the first half as Michigan took nine shots with only one reaching net and Indiana had four shots with two on goal.
Michigan's best opportunity game in the 55th minute when Blake sent in a cross from the right side of the field to Sammi Atterbury. She fired a one-touch shot at Bethany Kopel, who barely got into position to make a save that bounced off her gloves which gave Atterbury a second chance at a goal. However, the secondary shot went inches wide of the left post.
The Wolverines had another chance at a goal late in the second half when a through ball was corralled by Kopel less than a moment before Sarah Stratigakis could make a move toward the goal.
With time dwindling, Indiana dropped a majority of its team back into the defensive end of the field to prevent the Wolverines from penetrating the backline and forced the game into overtime.
Both teams took one shot off in the first overtime period as Beall made an easy save and the Wolverines' shot sailed high and out of play.
Michigan fired two shots in the first two minutes of the second overtime period, but both sailed left of the goal. The Hoosiers continued to play a defense-minded game with just one attacking forward, who got a shot off right at Beall. The Wolverine keeper made her fourth and final save of the afternoon.
U-M will hit the road for its next contest, as it will travel to Madison to face Wisconsin on Thursday night (Oct. 3). The match is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. CDT and will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
