ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 24-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team could not overcome an early deficit as it was shut out, 2-0, at No. 13 Wisconsin on Thursday night (Oct. 3) at McClimon Track/Soccer Complex.
The loss was the Wolverines' first in Big Ten play as the win propelled the Badgers (8-2-1, 4-0-0 Big Ten) into first place in the conference standings.
The U-M offense managed just four shots on the night, all of which landed on goal, while Wisconsin took 10 shots with seven on goal.
Freshman Danielle Wolfe put two shots on frame for the Michigan, while Hillary Beall made five stops in goal. Dani Rhodes was the game-changer for Wisconsin, netting both Badger goals.
Eighteen minutes into the match, Wisconsin put the first shot of the match past Beall as Rhodes headed the ball into the net to put the Badgers up, 1-0.
Michigan (8-3-1, 3-1-1 Big Ten) had just two chances in the first half and both were on net, but Wisconsin goalkeeper Jordyn Bloomer turned them away. The stops helped Wisconsin take a 1-0 advantage into the break.
The Badgers had the first shot of the second half before Cameron Murtha dribbled the ball to the line and crossed it into a striking Rhodes, who one-timed it into the bottom-left corner of the net to extend the Wisconsin lead to 2-0 in the 62nd minute.
Two minutes later, Wolfe put her second shot on goal but it was an easy scoop for Bloomer, who made her third save of the evening. Michigan fired one final shot on net that Bloomer stopped to secure the Wisconsin win.
The Wolverines will be back in action Sunday (Oct. 6) against Nebraska at 1 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium. The game is U-M's inaugural Pride Day and is the first game of a doubleheader with the Michigan men's soccer team, which will take on Northwestern at 4 p.m.
