NAPLES, Italy -- University of Michigan thrower Joe Ellis finished top-10 in the hammer throw on Tuesday (July 9), the second day of track and field action at the 2019 World University Games.
Ellis, representing Great Britain after completing his Michigan eligibility this spring, finished ninth overall in the 12-man final with a best of 66.27m (217 feet, 5 inches).
He launched that mark on his first attempt, but was unable to improve on it in his two subsequent throws. His second was a foul as he bailed out of a throw that appeared to not feel right late, and he foot fouled his third-and-final attempt of the trials.
Entering his final throw he was in ninth place and he needed to move up just a single spot to be among the eight men who earned three additional attempts.
The World University Games is serving to bridge the gap between his first-team All-America performance at the NCAA Championships last month and the British Championships next month.
Ellis' performance comes on the heels of teammate Andrew Liskowitz taking the silver medal in the shot put for Team USA on Monday (July 8). With Ellis and Liskowitz having finished their competitions, there are no further competitions at these World University Games featuring Michigan track and field student-athletes.
