ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan track and field All-Americans Andrew Liskowitz and Joe Ellis will take their talents to the world stage next week when they compete in the 30th World University Games in Naples, Italy, on Monday and Tuesday (July 8-9).
Both coming off of eighth-place first team All-America performances at the NCAA Outdoor Championships last month, Liskowitz will represent Team USA in the shot put and Ellis will go for Great Britain in the hammer throw.
Hosted by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), the World University Games are held every two years to bring the world's top college-aged talent together in competition. Akin to the Olympic Games, the World University Games -- also known as the Summer Universiade -- include 18 different sports in its overall program.
Competing internationally for the first time in his career, Liskowitz will look to leverage the momentum from his school-record shot put last weekend into the event title in Napoli on Monday. His 21.25m (69 feet, 4.5 inches) best puts him in contention for the win, but he must first navigate the qualifying process.
Should he be among the top-12 or achieve the automatic standard in the qualification rounds Monday morning starting at 10 a.m. local time (4 a.m. EDT), he would advance to the final later that night at 7:20 p.m. local time (1:20 p.m. EDT).
Qualification for Ellis in the hammer throw begins Monday at noon local time (6 a.m. EDT) as he looks to advance to the Tuesday final at 5:30 p.m. local time (11:30 a.m. EDT).
These games also mark Ellis' first global competition, though he has been a fixture at the British Championships during his time at Michigan.
Automatic qualifying standards from the qualification rounds into the finals for both events will be announced closer to the start of competition.
