AUSTIN, Texas -- Senior Taylor McLaughlin of the University of Michigan men's track and field team finished his collegiate career with a personal record in the 400-meter, became a first team All-American with a fourth-place finish and which helped U-M earn 12 team points to finish the NCAA Outdoor Championships in a tie for 26th place with Kansas State.
McLaughlin got off to a fast start on a night that produced several record times at Mike A. Myers Stadium. He broke 49 seconds (48.85) for the first time in his career. It is the fastest time achieved during a collegiate meet in program history and bested Neil Gardner's 49.18 at the 1997 NCAA Championship.
Initially, McLaughlin crossed the finish line in fifth place but a disqualification moved him up one spot to fourth place in the event. He is the first Wolverine since Ali Arastu in 2013 to place in the top four at the NCAA Championship. McLaughlin placed fifth as a freshman in 2016 and again as a junior in 2018.
Over his career, McLaughlin has five USTFCCCA All-America honors, including four first-team honors. He is the only man in school history to finish in the top eight in the 400m hurdles/440-yard hurdles three times. Only six men have accomplished the feat in the same event at U-M as McLaughlin joins Fritz Nilsson (discus and shot put), Bill Watson (shot put), Mark Booth (high jump), Kevin Sullivan (1,500-meter run) and Andrew Ellerton (800-meter run).
The collegiate track and field season has officially ended for the Michigan men. Select student-athletes will continue to compete throughout the summer, including at national championship meets for the United States and other nations.
