BALTIMORE, Md. -- The No. 3 seed University of Michigan women's lacrosse team took a 19-9 loss to No. 2 seed Northwestern in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament Friday night (May 3) at Homewood Field.
The Wolverines lost for just the third time this season and second to the Wildcats as U-M made its first appearance in the tournament since the conference went to a four-team format in 2016.
Junior Molly Garrett led the Wolverines, scoring a career-best six goals -- four of which came in the first half. Her six goals are tied for second all-time for a single game by a Michigan player, tied with senior Adriana Pendino.
Sophomore Caitlin Muir recorded her 11th multi-point game of the season and fourth straight with her pair on the night, while Chandler Kirby also collected one for the Wolverines.
Junior Sydney Whitaker led the Michigan backline with three caused turnovers and senior Casey Cummo had a team-best three ground balls. In the cage, senior Mira Shane took the loss after making 10 saves -- her fifth game this season with double-digit stops.
The Wolverines started quickly when Maggie Kane won the draw control and got the ball up the field to Nadine Stewart, who found Garrett for the first goal of the game just 13 seconds into the contest. The two teams exchange goals over the first 12 minutes as the game was tied at 4 before Northwestern used a 4-0 run to take a 7-4 lead with 15:10 to play in the first half.
Garrett scored back-to-back goals to bring Michigan within two, 8-6, but the Wildcats quickly responded again to go up, 9-6, with under nine minutes remaining. The Wildcats added one final goal to take a 10-6 advantage into the break.
Garrett paced Michigan with a career-best four goals in the first half, while Shane made seven saves.
The Wildcats opened the second half with five straight goals before Garrett put a stop to the run with her fifth of the contest with 22:38 remaining in the second half. Northwestern continued to build its lead, going up by 11, 19-8, to force a running clock with over 13 minutes left.
Muir added one final goal for the Wolverines, but they could not mount a comeback.
Michigan will learn its NCAA Tournament fate on Sunday (May 5) during the selection show, which is scheduled for 8 p.m. on NCAA.com.
