TUCSON, Ariz. -- Graduate transfer Jack Lint finished off a career-best performance in the decathlon with a come-from-behind victory at the Arizona Jim Click Shootout on Friday (April 5).
Lint posted a new personal-record 7,596 points to take the victory in the 10th-and-final event, with a significant lifetime-best throw in the javelin in the ninth event putting him in position for the win.
His score -- fifth-best in Michigan history and enough to move Lint to the No. 2 spot on the all-time school performers list behind only Big Ten champion Steven Bastien -- puts Lint in strong position to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June. Never before has a score greater than 7,500 points failed to make the NCAA meet.
With his performance on Friday, Lint ranks No. 3 in the country, though few top-flight decathlon competitions have taken place prior to this weekend.
Entering the second-and-final session of the decathlon in the lead after a career-best first day of competition on Thursday, Lint kept the momentum going on Friday.
His day began with a 14.86 (-0.7m/s) clocking in the 110-meter hurdles, less than a quarter of a second off his personal record for 867 points.
While his big day-one score required clutch third-attempt performances on Thursday, no such theatrics were necessary on Friday. His best throw in the discus came on his first attempt as he launched a 39.97m (131 feet, 1 inch) mark for 664 points.
Lint posted a solid day in the pole vault as well, clearing 4.40m (14-5.25) for 731 points. He took three unsuccessful attempts at a career-best tying 4.50m.
His best performance came in the penultimate event of the day, the javelin, and he ultimately needed every inch of it. On his second attempt, he heaved the spear 56.79m (186-4) to obliterate by more than four and a half meters his previous career best. The performance garnered him 690 points.
However, Hubert would take the overall lead from Lint after the javelin on the strength of his 61.27m (201-0) mark. Entering the 1,500-meter finale, Lint trailed his Red Raider rival by a mere 10 points. Had Lint's opening javelin mark of 40.07m (161-0) stood as his best of the day, he would have fallen 125 points back.
Lint sealed the victory in the 1,500 meters, clocking 4:41.77 for 669 points, as Hubert could only manage 5:01.12 for 553 points. Lint's margin of victory wound up being 106 points over Hubert, all of which was generated by his personal record in the javelin.
Lint tallied 3,621 points on Friday, tied for the fourth-best day-two performance in a decathlon in Michigan school history.
The full Michigan squad will be back in action next Friday and Saturday (April 12-13), albeit at two different meets. The Wolverine sprinters, distance runners and jumpers will all compete at the Louisville Invitational, while the throwers -- including the 2019 spring debuts of All-Americans Joe Ellis and Andrew Liskowitz -- will compete at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational.
