The University of Michigan men's tennis team will host the 2019 Big Ten Tournament from Thursday through Sunday (April 25-28) at the Varsity Tennis Center, which marks the third time the facility has hosted the event (1999, 2009).
The No. 22-ranked Wolverines will begin the quest for their first conference tournament title on Friday (April 26) at 10 a.m. after they finished 7-4 in the Big Ten which earned them the No. 4 seed and a first-round bye. U-M will face the winner of Thursday's (April 25) match between No. 5 seed Indiana and No. 12 seed Michigan State in the quarterfinals.
U-M is excited to provide zero-waste concessions at the Big Ten NCAA Men's Tennis Tournament. All uneaten food and serviceware provided by concessions can be composted. Teams and visitors are also invited to use the provided compost bins for their compostable items.
• The Wolverines are 9-3 at the Varsity Tennis Center this season and are 30-5 at home over the past three seasons.
• Two Wolverines are ranked by the ITA -- sophomore Mattias Siimar (No. 67) and freshman Andrew Fenty (No. 109).
• Andrew Fenty earned his team-leading 25th win last Sunday (April 21), which tied him for sixth most in program history for a freshman. Fenty also has a team-leading 19 doubles wins this season, putting him one win shy of being the 28th player in Michigan history to join the 20-20 club for 20 doubles wins and 20 singles wins in a season.
• Fenty comes into the tournament with the Wolverines' longest active singles win streak, having won in five straight matches.
• U-M has won the most Big Ten championships (36) but is in search of its first Big Ten Tournament title. The Wolverines are 18-20 all-time in the Big Ten Tournament since the first tournament was played in 1999, three years after claiming its last conference team championship (1996). Michigan's best finish in the Big Ten Tournament is second place, which it has accomplished three times (2007, 2013, 2017).
• The Maize and Blue beat both of their potential quarterfinal opponents earlier in the year. They defeated Michigan State, 6-1, on Feb. 27, during their Big Ten season opener and won by a score of 5-2 against Indiana on March 31.
